CANTON, Ohio
– The Great Midwest Athletic Conference and Mountain East Conference will combine talented student-athletes from both leagues for the inaugural joint championship meet starting Wednesday.

The four-day event at C.T. Branin Natatorium is being hosted by Malone University from Feb. 14-17.

The Great Midwest will have five institutions in the field: Alderson Broaddus, Davis & Elkins, Findlay, Hillsdale Malone and Ursuline. The Mountain East will sport five programs including Fairmont State, Notre Dame (OH), Urbana and West Virginia Wesleyan.

The pool will be buzzing with activity through preliminaries, finals and as teams compete for an overall meet championship trophy. In addition, for each gender there will be an Athlete of the Meet, Diver of the Meet and Coach of the Meet, as selected by all 10 head coaches.

The top eight finishers in each event will be recognized on the awards podium, with the top three earning medals. Each conference will also award respective all-conference honorees following the conclusion of the meet.

The G-MAC/MEC Championship can be viewed through a video feed on the Great Midwest Digital Network. MEC fans can also watch on their respective platforms through the Mountain East Digital Network.

An inaugural championship event means that all top winning meet times are meet records and the same goes throughout the regular season for the Great Midwest with its first season of official sport sponsorship.

Top-10 times between the G-MAC and MEC are riddled with Great Midwest swimmers. Fourteen individual men’s events and 15 women’s events all have Great Midwest swimmers leading the pack with some familiar faces as athletes of the week headlining the categories.

Findlay has appeared in the CSCAA Top-25 Coaches Poll throughout the season and the Oilers’ women head into Canton with a No. 25 billing nationally. On paper, it would appear the Oilers would be the presumed team favorites heading in, but a championship setting will bring out the best from everyone in attendance.

In terms of top times from within the league, the Oilers have dominated the relay events by owning top marks in 10 different freestyle and medley races.

UF’s five-time Great Midwest Athlete of the Week Janko Radmanovic is going to be in the spotlight with season top times in the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 500 free, 100 butterfly and 200 butterfly. He has NCAA “B” qualifying times in those five events.

Junior Amanda Stiegal also sports three different “B” qualifying times in the 50 free, 100 free and 200 free. She was named CollegeSwimming.com National Athlete of the Week in mid-November, the same week as Radmanovic.

Hillsdale has had a quartet of ladies earn athlete of the week honors including NCAA qualifier Anika Ellingson (twice), Hannah Wilkens, Katherine Heeres and Grace Houghton.

Davis & Elkins has a strong underclassman combo of Pedro Gaspar and Javier Sanchez, both selected Great Midwest athletes of the week this year. Malone’s Dominic Mariano is one of a handful of divers slated for competition and has two conference weekly honors to his credit for his 1 and 3-meter scores.

Several Great Midwest schools also earned CSCAA Scholar All-America Team awards for 2017 including Findlay and Hillsdale on the women’s side and Davis & Elkins and Findlay on the men’s side.
