INDIANAPOLIS - Walsh sophomore Mercedes Fernandez was named the first Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week on Tuesday.
 
The Cavaliers competed at the Fall ITA Midwest Regional Championships hosted by Northwood University in Midland, Mich.
 
Fernandez went 3-1 overall in singles and advanced to the to the Singles Quarterfinals before falling to Davenport University’s Steph Ritson.
 
The sophomore defeated competitors from Saginaw Valley State University, Ferris State University, and Wayne State University, and made it further than any other Great Midwest Conference competitor in the tournament.
 
Fernandez is currently playing No. 1 singles for the Cavaliers in the shortened fall season with a 1-1 record. Walsh is 0-2 in dual competition.
