Tennis Student-Athletes Shine in Classroom for 2017 ITA Academic Awards

– Great Midwest Athletic Conference men’s and women’s tennis student-athletes reaped the benefits from their academic success as the International Tennis Association released awards for the 2016-17 year.
 
The organization introduced both the ITA Academic Teams and the ITA Scholar-Athletes spanning all three NCAA divisions along with the NAIA and junior college ranks.
 
NCAA Division II had a total of 138 ITA Academic Teams and 781 ITA Scholar-Athletes. There was a grand total of 720 ITA Academic Teams and 3,908 ITA Scholar-Athletes.
 
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2016 and spring 2017).
 
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).
 
ITA Academic Teams on the women’s side included Cedarville, Davis & Elkins, Findlay and Hillsdale. Tiffin, a future Great Midwest member institution, is also on the list.
 
ITA Academic Teams on the men’s side include Findlay and again, Tiffin.
 
Twenty different female student-athletes earned the distinction of ITA Scholar-Athletes. Findlay had seven selections while Cedarville and Davis & Elkins each reported five. Hillsdale received two awards.
 
The men were paced by Findlay’s three selections of Oriol Ferrer, Sherwin Miranda and Colin Emert.
 
Tiffin’s men’s and women’s tennis programs had 14 total selections.
