DAYTON, Ohio – Davis & Elkins finished off back-to-back Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Championship title runs with a 5-1 win over Cedarville on Saturday at the Five Seasons Complex indoors.
The top-seeded Senators won their third G-MAC championship trophy in five years, adding to titles won in 2014 and 2016.
D&E beat No. 4 Kentucky Wesleyan in Friday’s semifinals while the second-seeded Yellow Jackets advanced to the title match by toppling No. 3 Alderson Broaddus in opening-round action.
Davis & Elkins improved to 14-10 on the season while Cedarville finished the postseason at 13-7.
Friday’s semifinals were played at Cedarville’s Johnson-Murdoch Complex outdoors, but the threat of inclement weather was enough to move the remainder of the tournament indoors.
The Senators took a 2-1 lead through doubles competition as G-MAC Player of the Year Lauren Fermosel and Elise Simon along with Ester Bolmenas and Kelsie Roby each won the No. 1/3 battles.
Three of the six singles matches went final in favor of D&E as the Yellow Jackets started gaining momentum in the remaining matches that went unfinished.
Simon edged out G-MAC Freshman of the Year Janelle English in straight sets to highlight the No. 2 singles matchup. Bolmenas also won in straight sets against Cedarville’s Halie Hardwick, 6-2, 6-4, and Roby’s strong finish to the season was capped with a straight-set victory.
Bolemenas and Hardwick’s match was the clincher. But the first sets went in favor of Cedarville for the likes Lauren Jackson at No. 1, Rosie Thompson at No. 5 and Deanna Whalen at No. 6 singles, respectively.
