INDIANAPOLIS - Davis & Elkins freshmen pairing Matthew Alexander and Ester Bolmenas were named Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Athletes of the Week on Monday.
This is the first career weekly conference honor for both respective student-athletes.
Alexander won his singles and doubles matches in non-conference action against Salem International.
Alexander faced off against Eugene Bour of the Tigers, with Alexander winning in three sets, 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7), to pick up his fifth win of the season in singles competition.
The talented rookie from Bath, England, worked with teammate Samuel Vallieres to win their doubles match by a score of 8-5. Alexander and Vallieres have combined for four doubles wins this season.
D&E beat SIU with a final team score of 8-1 and the Senators moved to 7-7 overall.
Another first-year student-athlete, the freshman Bolmenas, helped the D&E women win four straight over the past week, including conference wins against Alderson Broaddus, Cedarville and Kentucky Wesleyan. D&E also beat Salem International in shutout fashion.
Monday saw the Senators walk away with an 8-1 victory against Alderson Broaddus. Bolmenas, from Tibro, Sweden, competed in the No. 3 singles match and No. 3 doubles with teammate Kelsie Roby to win by a score of 8-3.
Bolmenas picked up her fourth and fifth straight wins starting with a defeat of Cedarville’s Halie Hardwick in the No. 3 singles matchup in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-3. Bolmenas and Roby defeated Cedarville’s Rosie Thompson and Deanna Whalen, 8-1.
Bolmenas completed a near-perfect week with singles and doubles wins in the shutout against Kentucky Wesleyan at home in Elkins.
