INDIANAPOLIS – With each divisional champion to be determined with two matches left in the schedule, the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Volleyball Players of the Week were announced on Monday afternoon.
The Great Midwest Championship field has been set with four teams from the East Division (Lake Erie, Walsh, Malone, Davis & Elkins) and four teams from the West Division (Findlay, Hillsdale, Cedarville, Kentucky Wesleyan) all qualifying for the postseason.
The only question remains where the eight-team tournament will be conducted at -- either Hillsdale or Findlay -- going into the final week of the regular season.
East Division Player of the Week
Paola Ferrario
Walsh
Outside Hitter
Junior
Gorla Minore, Italy (Liceo dello Sport)
Ferrario and the Cavaliers (19-9, 12-4 G-MAC) carved out a 3-0 record in as many days against divisional opponents Ohio Valley, Alderson Broaddus and Davis & Elkins, in order.
The Cavaliers remain second in the East Division standings with matches at Lake Erie and Ursuline to end the regular season this week.
Ferrario recorded 26 kills in just four sets against Ohio Valley, just one kill shy of matching the conference single-match record of 27 held by Katelyn Atkinson (Trevecca vs. Oakland City) back in 2015.
Her 26 kills in four sets tied former Cedarville standout Abby Shelton for the second most all-time. Shelton had 26 kills in four sets against Alderson Broaddus, also in 2015.
She followed that 15 kills vs. Alderson Broaddus and 12 more against D&E in straight-set sweeps for the Cavaliers. Ferrario had an attacking percentage of .339 and led all players in the league for the week by averaging 5.30 kills per set.
Ferrario also had double-digit dig totals vs. OVU and AB while averaging 2.60 per game on the week.
West Division Player of the Week
Allyssa Van Wienen
Hillsdale
Middle Blocker
Grand Rapids, MI (Grand Rapids Christian)
Van Wienen earned divisional weekly honors for the second time in her rookie season as the Chargers extended their conference-record win streak to 17 straight.
The previous-best win streak around the conference in nearly six years of league history was nine straight victories done five different times since 2012. The Chargers went through the entire month of October undefeated
Hillsdale improved to 24-3 overall and 14-2 in the league after blanking West opponents Kentucky Wesleyan and Trevecca with sweeps.
Van Wienen was a force up front along with her teammates in both matches while hitting .438 and averaging 4.17 kills per set.
Van Wienen had 14 kills and four blocks against Kentucky Wesleyan in three sets. She added 11 kills, a pair of service aces and another block in the win against Trevecca.
Hillsdale was receiving votes for the second week in a row in the AVCA Top-25 Poll. The Chargers are also ranked third in the first edition of the NCAA Midwest Region Rankings.
