Cross Country Athletes of the Week (Oct. 3)

10.3.17

INDIANAPOLIS - The Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s & Women’s Cross Country Athletes of the Week were announced for the fifth week of the regular season on Tuesday.

Two seniors earned respective recognition with record-setting performances at the All-Ohio Championships in the 8K men’s distance as well as the 6K women’s distance.

Four women’s teams and one men’s team were represented by the conference in the USTFCCCA Top 25 National Poll in Week 3. Hillsdale’s women’s team moved up to fourth, while Cedarville’s women stayed firm at 10th.

Walsh is the only team with both their men and women’s team ranked with the women coming in at 19th and the men filling out the USTFCCCA Top-25 poll at 25th.

The Malone women’s team also received votes and is unofficially ranked 31st

Daniel Michalski
Cedarville
Senior
Xenia, OH (Xenia HS)

With a second-place finish at the All-Ohio Championships among Division II runners, Cedarville’s Daniel Michalski has earned this week’s Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week. Michalski led Cedarville to a third-place finish at the event.

His time of 25:02 was also the fastest 8K time in the conference so far this season, and quick enough for the 12th all-time in conference history since 2012.

In both invites Michalski has competed in, the two-time first-team all-conference runner has led the Yellow Jackets.

This is the senior’s fifth time winning G-MAC Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors in his career.

Sarah Berger
Walsh
Senior
Wadsworth, OH (Wadsworth HS)

For the second time this season, Berger has earned the Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week for the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

The senior ran a 6K time of 20:52 to establish a new conference record, besting a 21-minute flat time recording by Carsyn Koch (Cedarville) at last year’s NCAA DII Midwest Regional.

Berger led the Cavaliers to victory at the All-Ohio Championships among the Division II schools and she won the race individually while facing Division I competition.

She also owns the 5K all-time conference record that was set this season.

Berger has been the first Walsh runner to the finish line at all three meets so far this season.
