GREENWOOD, Ind. – Ursuline redshirt sophomore forward Laney Lewis was named the 14th Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week for 2015-16 on Monday.
This marks the second straight weekly conference honor for Lewis after receiving the same recognition last week. Her steady numbers across the board have vaulted her into player of the year conversation around the conference.
Once again, Lewis was deadly from the field and crashed the glass relentlessly as she carved out a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds in Ursuline’s only contest this week against Cedarville on the road.
Ursuline went into an environment where Cedarville was celebrating Senior Day, rallying for head coach Kirk Martin’s final home game in his retirement tour and playing in a packed house of 1,913 fans.
The Arrows overcame that and moved into a share of first place in the conference standings with Cedarville while salvaging the regular-season series with a split.
Ursuline improved to 21-3 overall and 10-2 in the G-MAC. The Arrows also had received votes in the current USA Today Coaches Poll.
Lewis connected at an efficient 7-of-9 in the field, a perfect 2-for-2 from beyond the arc and 3-of-4 at the free throw line. Lewis also contributed one assist, two blocks and three steals to round out her stats.
Lewis continues to pace the league in blocks (2.0) and rebounding at 11.2 per game. She is the only player averaging a double-double on the season with 13 points per contest, good for sixth-best in the G-MAC.
Additionally, Lewis ranks second in field goal percentage (.544), sixth in assists (3.4), second in free throw percentage (.800).
Ursuline took possession of first place in the G-MAC conference after their fist-win in program history over Cedarville. They upped their overall record to 21-3 and 10-2 in the G-MAC.
The Arrows are gearing up for their two final regular season games against Davis & Elkins and Alderson Broaddus before the conference tournament.
