CANTON, Ohio – Cedarville extended a dominant run with another impressive showing at the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Cross Country Championship on Saturday for its fifth title in as many years.
The Yellow Jackets’ women duplicated the same feat, making it a combined 10 conference cross country championship trophies brought home by Cedarville.
Cedarville’s men dug in deep to fight off conference championship host Malone on the Pioneers’ home course in a seven-team field.
A total of 79 men’s runners gave it their all in mid-40 temperatures and varying winds in the 8K race that began at 11:30 a.m.
The G-MAC Championship banquet was conducted on Friday night as conference runners were privileged by guest speaker Tony Migliozzi. Migliozzi is an accomplished Malone alum and the reigning 2015 World Champion in the 50K that was held in Qatar.
The top seven finishers were announced as first-team all-conference performers while eighth place through 14th received second-team all-conference distinction. Individual awards were also presented to three different individuals.
The G-MAC Runner of the Year was Malone sophomore George McCartney, the G-MAC Freshman of the Year was also from Malone in Mike Jankowski and Cedarville’s Paul Orchard was G-MAC Coach of the Year again.
The Yellow Jackets led all teams with five all-conference runners while Malone and Davis & Elkins each had three all-league members. Trevecca Nazarene placed two inside the top seven for first-team honors while Ohio Valley’s Justin Thompson secured second-team honors.
McCartney flexed his muscle in the men’s field, consistently leading the pack around four different loops. His teammate Jankowski led the race for the first 2K before McCartney was able to get out in front and finish the course in 26:37.90.
Cedarville won the race with a team time of 2:15.21, just eight total seconds of separation from the Pioneers. Malone was the runner-up in their first league meet while Davis & Elkins came in third. Trevecca Nazarene and Ohio Valley came in fourth and fifth while Kentucky Wesleyan and Alderson Broaddus rounded out the scoring at sixth and seventh, respectively.
Two individuals who were noticeably absent from the field and would have almost have been a lock to be in the mix at the top included Cedarville’s Daniel Michalski and Trevecca Nazarene’s Logan Rodgers. Both were out with undisclosed reasons.
The postseason continues for the G-MAC institutions at the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional that is scheduled for Saturday, November 5, in Evansville, Ind. The men’s race at regionals is a 10K in distance.
