G-MAC Baseball Pitcher/Player of the Week (April 27)

4.27.15

GREENWOOD, Ind. – The Great Midwest Athletic Conference honored Randy Dobnak of Alderson Broaddus and Bryson Shelton of Trevecca Nazarene with weekly baseball recognition as announced on Monday.

Pitching the second no-hitter within the G-MAC this spring (Matt Pobereyko – Kentucky Wesleyan), Dobnak triggered another strong weekend for Alderson Broaddus by nearing perfection with an 11-strikeout gem.

This represents the sophomore’s second G-MAC Pitcher of the Week selection of the season.

Shelton ripped 13 hits over the week for a torrid .500 batting average in 26 plate appearances with plenty of extra-base pop en route to G-MAC Player of the Week accolades.

Both respective institutions are ranked in a tie for seventh in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region rankings.

Alderson Broaddus standout Randy Dobnak was lights out once again, this time mowing down Bluefield State while flirting with a perfect game as the Battlers contend for top seeding in the G-MAC Championship.

In the non-conference game versus Bluefield State, Dobnak went the distance and faced one batter over the minimum to complete the seven-inning no-hitter.

Striking out 11, Dobnak only walked one to pick up his sixth win of the season in dominant fashion.

The righty finds himself in the top five in several pitching categories in the G-MAC including ERA (2.53), opponent batting average (.210), innings pitched (57.0), strikeouts (60), wins (6) and walks allowed (9).

Alderson Broaddus trails G-MAC-leading Trevecca Nazarene by a short margin with the conference regular-season title on the line. Both teams will clash for a decisive four-game showdown coming up soon.

Shelton’s performance this past week as a dangerous weapon in the middle of the order helped keep the Trojans in first place in the G-MAC.

Driving in 10 runs while scoring 10 times as well, Shelton had a tremendous week at the dish as the Trojans went 5-1.

With a two-game set against non-conference foe Bellarmine, Shelton went 5-for-8 with a pair of home runs and a double.

After going hitless the first two games of the Cedarville series, Shelton went a combined 8-for-10 in the final two games including a 5-for-5 performance with five runs scored, three RBI and a walk. Shelton had seven extra base hits in the six games.

Flying under the radar most of the year, Shelton is in the top five in some categories in the G-MAC: batting average, slugging percentage (.590), on-base percentage (.519), and walks (27).
