GREENWOOD, Ind. – Salem International’s Kevin Ortiz-Arroyo and Trevecca Nazarene’s Hunter Newman were selected as the first Great Midwest Athletic Conference Baseball Pitcher/Player of the Week picks for the new spring season as announced on Monday.
Ortiz handcuffed a high-octane offense from Saint Leo in a seven-inning effort over the weekend while Newman showcased his extra-base power over the opening weekend for the Trojans.

Making his second start of the spring, the rookie right-hander kept his team within striking distance against Saint Leo from the Sunshine State Conference, pitching seven strong innings on Saturday.
Against the Lions, Ortiz-Arroyo gave up just two runs on four hits while striking out four and issuing a pair of walks. He threw 91 pitches and induced a total of 11 ground ball outs.

Newman terrorized the pitching staff from USC Aiken over opening weekend as the G-MAC favorite Trojans tangled with the No.14-ranked Pacers on the road. The junior corner infielder launched three home runs, including two in Sunday’s series finale, while adding a double.
In three games, Newman was 7-for-12 at the plate (.583) with eight RBI, four runs scored. He swiped one base and had an unofficial plate appearance after being hit by a pitch.
During his spring debut on Friday, Newman was 3-for-5 in the series opener with four RBI. He belted a two-run blast with no outs in the fifth inning, singled in the sixth and singled in his first at-bat.
On Saturday, Newman legged out his first double as part of a 2-for-3 effort before swinging for the fences for a pair of two-run homers against USC Aiken on Sunday.
