GREENWOOD, Ind. – Kentucky Wesleyan’s Matt Pobereyko and Trevecca Nazarene’s Hunter Newman were both recognized as Great Midwest Athletic Conference Baseball Pitcher/Player of the Week selections on Monday.
Pobereyko locked down a season-opening victory on the mound for the Panthers against North Greenville while Newman repeated after terrorizing opposing pitchers for another weekend series.

The 6-3 Pobereyko turned in a workmanlike 5.2 innings in his spring debut, striking out eight Crusader hitters while receiving the winning decision on opening day in a 6-4 KWC victory.
After being staked to a 4-0 lead through the first two innings, Pobereyko silenced the North Greenville offense for five consecutive frames before the bullpen took over with two outs in the sixth.
The hard-throwing righty gave up three earned runs on six hits and walked a pair while throwing 102 pitches.

Newman elevated his already impressive numbers to a different level as he sustained a torrid start to his junior season. He went 9-for-12 in his latest offensive display, driving in eight runs to go with four runs and four more extra-base hits in a three-game set against Maryville.
Newman homered in the series opener and laced pair of doubles. He legged out another double while going 4-for-4 in the last game of Saturday’s twinbill and had four RBI in the first game of the doubleheader.
He also reached base with two walks and a hit-by-pitch and had another unofficial at-bat with a sacrifice fly.
This spring, the standout corner infielder is hitting .667 (16-for-24) with 16 RBI and four home runs. His slugging percentage is at 1.333 and on-base percentage at a .690 clip through six games.
