MASON, Ohio - On Wednesday, the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Baseball Championships got going at Prasco Park and Legacy Field with five scheduled games, all in the winners portion of the

GAME ONE - #5 Cedarville vs. #4 Davis & Elkins
In the first contest played on Prasco Parks field, as the G-MAC is using both Prasco Park and Legacy Field at Prasco for the 2014 Baseball Championships, Cedarville University advanced in the winners bracket, 11-0 over Davis & Elkins College.
The Yellow Jackets posted two quick runs in the first, highlighted by an RBI-double by G-MAC Freshman of the Year Drew Johnson, in what was the start of a big afternoon for the freshman. In the fourth inning, Johnson started a four-run inning with a solo home run to lead off the inning. Sam Summerlin capped the scoring in the inning with a two-run single to left center.
Cedarville then added two in the seventh and three more in the ninth to close out the 11-0 win. In the seventh, David Lenhardt tripled to left and then scored on another RBI hit by Johnson. Johnson scored his third run of the game on a David Bancroft single to left. In the ninth, Lenhard led off the inning with a solo homer, and Johnson collected his fourth hit of the afternoon.
Lenhardt and Johnson combined to go 7-10 with six runs scored, five runs batted in, two home runs, a double and a triple.
On the mound, Cedarville’s Jordan Adams pitched the complete game shutout, allowing just three hits. He walked four and struck out three in the win.
Cedarville will advance to play top seed Trevecca Nazarene at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at Prasco Park, while Davis & Elkins will face off against the loser of game five (which will be played at 5:30 p.m. this evening). The Senators game will start at Noon on Thursday, May 8 at Prasco Park.
GAME TWO - #6 Ohio Valley vs. #3 Alderson Broaddus
In the first game of the afternoon, which was actually game two of the bracket, was played on Legacy Field at Prasco Park between #6 Ohio Valley University and #3 Alderson Broaddus University, with the Battlers of AB advancing in the winners bracket with a 5-2 victory.
After two scoreless innings, OVU broke through with a run in the third as Chris Perna was hit by a pitched, moved over on a Max Brown single and later scored on a wild pitch. However, Alderson Broaddus took control of the game in the fourth, plating four runs on only two hits, as two errors by OVU allowed AB to post a big inning.
In the fourth, OVU should have had a 1-2-3 inning, but two errors gave AB a couple of base runners and an RBI single by Travis Hurley scored the Battlers first run. OVU then hit two batters to give Alderson Broaddus another pair of baserunners and Brandon Gignac capped the scoring with a two-run single through the left side.
AB added a single run in the bottom of the eighth on a RBI single by Marquis Collier, and OVU finished the scoring with a run in the ninth and left two stranded in a come-from-behind attempt. In the ninth Chris Perna’s sacrifice fly gave OVU its second run. However, G-MAC Pitcher of the Year Jeff Conley came into the game and earned the save after Bobby Colton went 8.1 innings allowing two runs on four hits. He struck out eight and walked six.
Despite the loss, Cole Yoder of OVU tossed a nice game, going eight innings, allowing six hits and only one earned run.
Alderson Broaddus will advance in the winners bracket and play in game #5 in the bracket against the winner of #7 Salem International and #2 Kentucky Wesleyan at 5:30 on Wednesday on Legacy Field again. Ohio Valley will look to avoid elimination in game #6 on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. on Legacy Field against the loser of the SIU - KWC contest.
GAME THREE - #7 Salem International vs. #2 Kentucky Wesleyan
In the final game of the opening contests, #2 Kentucky Wesleyan slowly built a 3-0 lead scoring a single run in the second, third, and fourth innings. However, they blew up the game scoring eight in the fifth and four more in the sixth to capture a 15-0 win in seven innings.
In the second, Mark Hagedorn had an RBI single to right and a RBI double in the fourth, while Jonathan Eberhardt doubled to right in the third to plate the first three runs for KWC. In the fifth inning, the Panthers scored eight runs on five hits, one error, and five walks. Eberhardt had a two-run double to start the scoring, and Dennon Koziol had a two-run single to cap the scoring as Kentucky Wesleyan sent 13 batters to the plate.
With the game in hand, KWC scored four more in the sixth on four hits, highlighted by two RBI singles, an RBI walk, and a sacrifice fly. Hagedorn posted his third hit of the game and his fourth RBI.
Along with Hagedorn, Koziol and Nathan Hedgepath each recorded three hits, while Eberhardt and Klye Emig each had two. Koziol and Eberhardt each drove in three runs, while Emig scored three. On the mound, Aussie Light pitched seven complete. He did allow nine hits, but left all runners stranded for the shutout performance. He struck out five and waked only one in the victory.
Kentucky Wesleyan returns to action quickly, facing Alderson Broaddus in the winners bracket at 5:30 p.m. today on Legacy Field at Prasco. Salem International will face off against Ohio Valley University on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. on Legacy Field in the tournament’s first elimination game.
GAME FOUR - #5 Cedarville vs. #1 Trevecca Nazarene
In the final game on day one, top seed Trevecca Nazarene took the field for the first time in the tournament after earning a first round bye for securing the top seed. The Trojans looked like a top seed, winning and advancing with a 14-4 victory over Cedarville.
The Yellow Jackets grabbed a 4-0 lead by scoring three in the second inning as G-MAC Freshman of the Year Drew Johnson, who went 4-5 with three runs and three RBI in the first game, doubled and later scored on a two-run single by Zach Huskey. CU added a fourth run in the third on a Johnson sacrifice fly. Johnson finished the game 1-2 with a run and a RBI, making him 5-6 with four runs and four RBI in two games, including a home run and two doubles.
Trevecca’s bats woke up in the fourth inning as they plated seven runs on six hits. Hunter Newman led off the inning with a home run to left field. Eathan Hurt and Nick Howell each had two-run singles in the inning. Ryan Arington and Tyler Tichenor also added RBIs in the inning.
The offense didn’t stop for TNU as they added two in the fifth, two in the sixth, and three more in the seventh to end the game in the seventh as the tournament is being played with the ten run rule.
In the fifth, Luke Fennell homered to start the inning and Arington added his second sacrifice fly. In the sixth, Nick Howell hit a solo shot to lead off the inning, making it three straight innings that the Trojans led off with a home run.
In the seventh, Trevecca ended the game as Howell and Newman each doubled, with Newman driving in two runs on his shot down the line. The game officially ended on an RBI single by Bryson Shelton.
On the mound, Alex Shoulders survived a shaky start to go seven innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. He walked four and struck out four, earning the win.
Trevecca advances to the winners bracket finals against #3 Alderson Broaddus, with the winner advancing into the Championship Finals out of the winners bracket. Cedarville will wait for its opponent on Thursday. The Yellow Jackets will play at Noon against the winner of Ohio Valley vs. Salem International.
GAME FIVE - #3 Alderson Broaddus vs. #2 Kentucky Wesleyan
Randy Dobnak and Jeff Conley teamed up to pitch a shutout as Alderson Broaddus knocked off second-seeded Kentucky Wesleyan, 5-0 on Legacy Field at Prasco Park.
AB's pitching took center stage with Dobnak going seven strong innings allowing just two hits and four walks, while striking out eight KWC hitters. As the Panthers attempted a comeback loading the bases late in the game, Conley took the mound for the second time in as many games on Wednesday and closed the door picking up his second save of the day and fourth of the season with two scoreless innings that featured five strikeouts.
The Battler offense got on the board in the top of the first when Jordan Martin and David Bryan led off the inning back-to-back singles and Conley delivered a double into the gap in right-center to plate a pair and put AB up 2-0.
In the second the Battlers doubled its advantage, as they were assisted by a walk and a hit by pitch from the Panthers pitching staff. Martin singled to load the bases before Bryan picked up an RBI on a fielder’s choice and Daniel Essian pushed the lead to 4-0 with a single.
AB tacked on an insurance tally in the eighth as they successfully pulled off the double steal to take set the 5-0 final. The Panthers threatened in the bottom of the eighth using a Connor Petschke double and a pair of walks to load the bases and chase Dobnak, but Conley stranded the runners and struck out the side in the ninth to secure the win.
The Battlers advance into the winners bracket finals on Thursday when they take on the top-seeded Trevecca Nazarene at 6:00 p.m. at Prasco Park, while Kentucky Wesleyan will face Davis & Elkins in the tournament’s second elimination game at 12:00 p.m. at Prasco Park.
