Women’s Tennis: Athlete of the Week

Lauren Jackson
Cedarville University - Freshman
Dayton, Ohio - Vandalia Butler

Lauren Jackson has been named the Great Midwest Athletic Conferences Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Month to begin the 2013-14 spring portion of the season. It is the second time she has earned this honor after being named Athlete of the Month to open the fall season.

In the five matches she has played in over the month of March, she was 3-1 in singles action coming from the #1 position, and was a perfect 5-0 in doubles. She earned singles wins over Trine, Berry, and Montana State Billings, falling to Kentucky Wesleyan as she was winning (6-4, 4-3), but was forced to retire because of injury. The loss by retiring was her first since Sept. 26, winning five straight. She is now 9-3 on the season in singles.

In doubles, Jackson has won 10-straight matches with partner Joy Dice. In March, the pair recorded wins over Trine, Berry, Montana State Billings, Eastern, and Kentucky Wesleyan. The win over Berry was the best match of the season, winning in a tiebreaker 9-8 (8-6).

Hamon had a busy March, going 8-1 in singles matches out of the #1 and #2 positions. In doubles, he went 7-2.

In the two conference matches to this point, Hamon is 1-0 in singles, winning #2 singles over Cedarville (6-1 ,6-1), and 2-0 in doubles, winning both #2 doubles over Cedarville and Central State.

-----------------------
Men’s and Women’s Tennis names an Athlete of the Month, rather than Athlete of the Week due to the fact that the NCAA tennis season covers both the fall and spring semesters. The randomness of a specific tennis schedule also does not adapt itself to a weekly award since there are weeks in which a team may not play. Winners will be announced following the months of September, October, March, and April.
