NASHVILLE, Tennessee - On Friday evening, the semifinal round of the 2013-14 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Championships took place on the campus of Trevecca Nazarene University, as #5 Ursuline College and #1 Trevecca Nazarene faced off prior to #3 Kentucky Wesleyan University taking on #2 Cedarville University.

SEMIFINAL GAME ONE (Box Score)

In the first semifinal, Ursuline and Trevecca battled back and forth throughout the first half. TNU jumped out to an 8-2 lead and held an advantage through the first 10 minutes. Ursuline took control and held the lead for the final seven minutes of the half, growing its lead to as many as 10 points. The Arrows went into the break up six, 37-31.

In the second half, the Trojans chipped away at the Arrows lead and eventually took control of the contest, leading most of the final ten minutes. The Trojans, who led by as many as 12 points, closed out the contest by a score of 79-69, outscoring the Arrows 48-32 in the second half.

The Trojans were led the balanced attack of Kaci Britt Bell (13 points), Sarah Raby (12 points), Christinia Curtner (10 points), and Helen Mitchner (10 points). Ursuline was led by Tajanee Wells and Jenny Grigsby, who each scored 19, while Wells recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds.

SEMIFINAL GAME TWO (Box Score)

In the second semifinal, Kentucky Wesleyan made a dramatic comeback late in the second half to force overtime and then again in the extra session to advance with a 99-95 win over Cedarville.

In the first half, the lead kept exchanging hands as neither team could get more than a one possession advantage, that is until the final minute of the half when Cedarville pushed the lead to five points and closed the half with a 43-38 lead.

In the second half, the game once again went back and forth with neither team holding anything more than a three point lead for a majority of the half. However, Cedarville looked to secure the win late as they built 83-73 lead after a quick 11-0 run.

Trailing by ten points and with just under three minutes to play, KWC had one last run in them. The Panthers closed the final three minutes on a 15-5 run, capped by a game-tying layup with eight seconds remaining by Jade Mills-Harris  to force overtime.  

In overtime, Cedarville jumped out scoring the first five points, but Kentucky Wesleyan finished strong again, closing out the final three minutes of overtime on a 11-2 run to secure the 99-95 win.

Kentucky Wesleyan advances to face the top seeded Trojans of Trevecca Nazarene. During the regular season, KWC lost just four games, but two of them came against TNU. However, the two wins by the Trojans came by a combined four points.
The G-MAC Women’s Basketball Championship will tip off at 2:00 p.m. (central) on Saturday in Nashville on the campus of Trevecca Nazarene.
