Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Mike Purcell
Trevecca Nazarene University (@TNUsports)
Junior - Pitcher
New Johnsonville, TN - Jackson State CC
Mike Purcell has been named G-MAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week after throwing the conference’s second no-hitter, one week after Kaleb Moore of Kentucky Wesleyan threw the first no-hitter in league history. Purcell’s no-hitter does hold the honor of the first G-MAC contest no-hitter.
In his lone appearance last week, Purcell tossed a seven-inning no-hitter in Trevecca's 3-0 win over Salem International. Similar to Moore, who missed a perfect game by hitting a batter with a pitch in the last inning, Purcell’s only blemish from being perfect was a two-out walk issued in the top of the first inning. He set down the next 19 batters after the walk.
Purcell struck out nine batters in the contest, a league best last week. This season he leads the Trojans' staff with a 6-1 record, tossing the most innings (44) while striking out 55 batters and issuing just 13 walks. He is limiting his opponents to a .204 batting average as well.
In the G-MAC, Purcell leads in strikeouts, innings pitched and wins. He is also in the top five in opponent batting average.
