Bryan Smith has been named G-MAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the second-straight week after his outing against #11 Grand Valley State University this past week. Smith guided the Trojans, who are in the provisional year of their reclassifying process into NCAA Division II, to a 4-3 win in nine innings.
The win for TNU was the programs first against a nationally ranked DII program as a member of the NCAA and its transition process. Smith pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on 11 hits and three TNU errors. He didn’t allow a walk and struck out two.
GVSU scored single runs in the first, fifth and sixth, tying the game at 3-3. Smith held them scoreless over the final three innings, allowing for the Trojans to score the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth for the 4-3 win.
On the season, Smith is 4-1 with a team-low 1.86 earned run average. In the G-MAC, Smith is tied for the conference lead with his four wins, though they have come in five starts, which is one less than his teammate Mike Purcell who has an identical 4-1 record over six starts. Smith has thrown the most innings, but is second to Purcell’s 39 strikeouts with 33 strikeouts. Opposing hitters are batting just .187 against Smith, the conference’s best mark with at-bats factored in.
Note: Some stat files are missing from other conference members due to the neutral site spring break games, but will be uploaded soon - which could cause Smith’s rankings to change.
