CEDARVILLE, Ohio - In front of a split, but energetic crowd, Cedarville University, who was looking for its third-straight G-MAC Volleyball Championship, played host to the second seed Fighting Scots of Ohio Valley.
In the first game, the teams exchanged attacks through the first half of the game keeping the Ohio Valley fans on their feet. Tied at 15-15, Amanda Weatherwax served her team to its first lead of the game as G-MAC Player of the Year Alyx Henry recorded the kill. Leading 17-16, OVU suffered a loss as Felicia Zartman left the game with an injury. Now playing with even more emotion, the Fighting Scots battled through the loss to extend its lead to 21-18, which OVU controlled and finished off 25-20 for the early match lead.
In game two, OVU had the early lead at 4-3, but behind the play of Tori Thompson in the middle, Cedarville made a quick 4-0 as she recorded three of the teams four kills in the stretch. It was the momentum the Yellow Jackets needed to bring them even in the match, as they finished the game off 25-20.
With both teams needing to capture the third game to grab the momentum, the third game was tied at 6-6, when OVU took a 12-7 lead behind back-to-back serve aces from Weatherwax. Following a Cedarville timeout, Maddie Ledbetter served the team to a 17-12 lead before the Scots ended the 10-0 run by the Jackets. CU carried all the momentum in the game and took the critical third game, 25-15.
Despite ending on a 18-3 run, Ohio Valley wasn’t going away as the teams battled once again through the first half of game four. Trailing 14-14, CU managed to push out in front 19-15 and it seemingly was all that they needed to capture the G-MAC crown for the third time in as many years.
For Cedarville, Hannah Wagner recorded a match-high 18 kills, while Tori Thompson, Amanda Bell, and Abby Shelton each added 10. Maddie Ledbetter recorded 30 assists to go with six digs and three service aces. Angela Becker had a match-high 22 digs for the Jackets.
Ohio Valley was led by Imani Ward’s 13 kills and Alyx Henry’s 10. Jessica Simpson had a match-high 34 assists and a team-high 17 digs.
