CU sweeps Men's and Women's XC Championships

CEDARVILLE, Ohio -
On Saturday afternoon, the Great Midwest Athletic Conference crowned its first champions of the 2013-14 academic year, as the Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships were hosted by Central State University at the King Cross Country Course on the campus of Cedarville University.

The Cedarville Yellow Jackets swept the championships, winning both the Men’s and the Women’s titles for the second-straight season. On the men’s side, Cedarville senior Matt Brooker finished first for the second-straight year, earning G-MAC Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Year honors and guiding his ranked Yellow Jacket team to the championship.

For the women, Lady Jackets sophomore Alex Archambault won the G-MAC Championship race for the second-straight year as well, earning her second G-MAC Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Year award. Both Brooker and Archambault also earned G-MAC All-Conference honors for their top finishes.

Trevecca Nazarene swept second place finishes on the men’s and women’s side as a team, only a minute and twenty seconds behind Cedarville on the women’s side, but eight minutes behind the Yellow Jackets on the men’s side due to the strength and depth of the Cedarville men’s roster, which was ranked #21 in the nation coming into the week.

Cedarville’s men featured all of the top five finishers (Brooker, Joe Niemiec, Ben Tuttle, Clay Watson, and Matt Cheney) and seven of the top ten finishes - including Brooker, Niemiec, Tuttle, Watson, Cheney, Neil Klinger (8th), and Wyatt Hartman (10th), all of whom were named to the G-MAC All-Conference First Team. 

Freshman Logan Rodgers of Trevecca Nazarene University finished sixth overall to earn All-Conference First Team Honors and as the top finishing freshman, was named G-MAC Men’s Cross Country Freshman of the Year, outdoing fellow TNU freshman Ben Moroney, a G-MAC All-Conference First Team selection, by 16 seconds.

Rounding out the All-Conference First Team was Ohio Valley Sophomore Andrew Shaffer, who finished ninth overall. The All-Conference Second Team, which was made up of the second group of ten finishers, included Tyler Greenwood (11th), Joel Dennison (13th), Jonathan Bitner (15th), Greg Johnson (17th), and Erik Johnson (18th) from Cedarville. Josh Winskie (12th) and Corley Webb (19th) earned Second Team honors from TNU, while Tommy Boone (14th) and Wes Anderson (16th) captured a spot from Davis & Elkins, and Ben Murphy from Ohio Valley capped the Second Team with his 20th place performance in a field of 62.

On the Women’s side, Cedarville claimed the top overall spot and then #8 - #10 to place four on the G-MAC All-Conference First Team. Archambault (#1) was joined by Olivia Esbenshade (#8), Rachel Groh (#9), and Kristin Lamaan (#10). Alderson Broaddus sophomore Jenny Brewer took the second spot in the race, just out running Ursuline freshman and G-MAC Women’s Cross Country Freshman of the Year, Michelle Klim by less than two seconds.

Klim was joined on the All-Conference first team by teammate  Nicole Burlinson, who placed fourth overall. Trevecca Nazarene, which placed second as a team, had a group of freshman - Lindsey Mathis, Katie Hix, and Biz McClendon - finish #5 - #7 and earn First Team honors.

The All-Conference Second Team featured four Cedarville runners - Haley Bredeson (13th), Kay Dunn (15th), Melanie Redfield (16th), Ali Logan (19th), while TNU had three - Lauren Carmody (12th), Jackie Sendewicz (17th), and Willow Moore (20th). Ursuline’s Melissa Klim finished with the fastest time among the All-Conference Second Team selections, finishing 11th and just a half second out of the top-ten. Ohio Valley freshman April Kirk finished 14th and Davis and Elkins junior Ellen Cantaral placed 18th to round out the All-Conference Second Team.

Rounding out the standings Ursuline placed third on the women’s side, while Alderson Broaddus, Davis & Elkins, and Ohio Valley placed fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively. On the men’s side, D&E, OVU, and AB finished third, fourth, and fifth  respectively. Rounding out the results, Kentucky Wesleyan, Salem International , and Central State finished in order on both the men’s and women’s side.
