INDIANAPOLIS- Northwood’s Maeve St. John was named the Great Midwest Player of the Year in a voting of the league’s women’s basketball coaches, while head coach Autumn Hunter earned the Coach of the Year honors. Ashland’s Jenna Slates was voted the Freshman of the Year honors.
St. John led the Timberwolves to their first G-MAC Regular Season title and the No. 1 overall seed in the conference tournament. She was a three-time Athlete of the Week selection and one of the league’s top point guards. St. John averaged 19.1 points per game and leads the league in assists with 4.4 a game. The Howell, Michigan native has the highest free-throw percentage in the conference at 89.7% on the year. St. John is also a defensive threat, averaging 3.7 steals with 104 total this season. St. John is joined by 2025 Freshman of the Year Lea Holmes as first team selections. Holmes is tied for first in the league in field goal percentage at 57% with 16.5 points per game. In addition to Holmes and St. John, Coach of the Year Autumn Hunter coached second-team all-conference selection Lexie Bowers. Hunter and the Timberwolves recorded a 24-5 overall and 19-1 conference record this season. They captured the first ever basketball regular season title, men or women, in program history. The Timberwolves broke the school record for longest winning streak earlier this season with their 11
th straight win against Kentucky Wesleyan. NU defeated Ashland in the quarterfinals and are set to face No.4 Walsh in the semifinals.
Jenna Slates was voted as the league’s top freshman after leading the league in rebounds with 11.41 a game. The North Canton, Ohio native ranked in the top five in the league in points per game (16.1) and field goal percentage (49.6%).
The Malone Pioneers earned the No. 2 seed as Erin Kaufman once again earned first-team all-conference honors. Kaufman ranks third in the G-MAC in scoring at 17.0 points per contest and earned athlete of the week honors twice this season. Malone earned the No. 2 seed and are set to take on the Oilers from the University of Findlay.
No. 3 Thomas More landed a pair of individuals on first team in Sereniti Webb and Rylee Turner. Webb averaged 13.2 points per game during the regular season and was named Athlete of the Week on February 2
nd after recording a double-double in a win over Tiffin. Turner ranked sixth in the league in rebounding, grabbing 7.4 rebounds per contest. The Saints’ season ended Tuesday in a 56-64 loss to No. 6 Findlay.
Walsh Cavalier standout Kiley Dyrlund earned first-team honors after leading the conference in several statistics. Dyrlund, a redshirt junior from Canton, leads the league in scoring (20.1), field goal percentage (57.0%), and steals (3.9). Under first-year head coach Johnny Montello, the Cavaliers earned the No. 4 seed after missing the conference championship last season.
Hillsdale’s Savannah Smith and Annalise Pietrzyk and Findlay’s Alyssa Ziehler round out first-team selections. Pietrzyk ranks fifth in the league in three-point percentage at 34.4% during the regular season with 2.3 made per game. Smith holds the league’s sixth-highest field-goal percentage, going 150-305 this season. The Chargers earned the No. 5 seed before falling to No. 4 Walsh on Tuesday.
Findlay’s Alyssa Ziehler led the Oilers to an upset over No. 3 Thomas More. Ziehler leads the Oilers in scoring, rebounding, and field goal percentage. Ziehler’s field goal percentage of 52.9% ranks as the fourth highest in the conference.
G-MAC semifinals will begin this evening at 5:30 P.M. ET followed by the second game at 7:30.
