INDIANAPOLIS – The new list of student-athletes excelling in the classroom on the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Academic All-Conference Team was officially released on Friday following the conclusion of the 2017-18 academic year.
 
The 2017-18 Great Midwest Academic All-Conference Team was comprised of a record 1,227 student-athletes from 13 full-member institutions, three associate member institutions and 22 championship sport offerings.
 
The first edition of the Great Midwest Academic All-Conference Team had 189 student-athletes in 2012-13. The 2013-14 academic listing featured 382 student-athletes, the 2014-15 team included 416 selections and 2015-16 saw another increase with 507. 2016-17 included another record number with 619 honorees before 2017-18 nearly doubled last year’s totals.
 
After Cedarville University led the league for five straight seasons with total student-athletes selected, the University of Findlay takes the mantle this year at the top as the Oilers crowned an impressive academic year with 205 academic all-conference members.
 
Walsh University finished runner-up with 173 student-athletes honored followed by Cedarville (117), Malone University (95) and 2017-18 Presidents’ Cup Award winner Hillsdale College with 85 to round out the top five.
 
To be named to the Great Midwest Academic All-Conference Team, the student-athlete’s grade point average must be a minimum of 3.30 based on the 4.0 system, the GPA shall be cumulative for the student-athlete’s entire collegiate career and the student-athlete must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing while completing at least one full academic year at the nominating institution.

If recent trends hold, the 2018-19 academic year should see yet another spike in numbers with the inclusion of first-year member institution Tiffin University effective on Sunday, July 1.
 
In 2017-18, 44 different student-athletes achieved a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA, another record-breaking number in the league’s six-year history.
