Jessica Saffold has been named the G-MAC Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week for the first time this year, and is the only other player from Urbana besides Ciara Geiger (five time winner) to earn the weekly honor.
Urbana was a perfect 2-0 on the week, both conference wins, improving to 6-1 on the season in the G-MAC and setting up a season-finale against 6-1 Trevecca Nazarene for the right to host the Conference Championship Tournament and the top seed.
In the team’s first game of the week on the road at Cedarville, Saffold recorded a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Saffold followed up the solid performance with five points and a game-high 14 rebounds, in a two-point victory over Central State at home on her Senior Night. She also chipped in a game-high seven assists.
Saffold surpassed a majority of her season averages this week with 13.0 rebounds per game (season average: 6.7 rpg), 9.0 points per game (season average: 5.3 ppg), and 4.0 assists per game (season average: 2.3 apg). She now ranks fourth in the conference in rebounding, while ranking sixth in steals after totaling three steals last week.
