Hillsdale defeated Findlay 4-1 in the semifinals and defeated Tiffin 4-3 for the conference championship. Gilbert was 4-0 in his matches, picking up a pair of wins at No. 5 singles and partnering with Brian Hackman to add two wins at No. 3 doubles.
In the semifinals, the Chargers earned the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles. Gilbert and Hackman took No. 3 doubles, 7-6 (6). Gilbert then won 6-3, 6-3 over Findlay’s Octavio Carrasco to clinch the win.
In the championship match, the Chargers once again gained early momentum by winning the doubles point. Gilbert and Hackman defeated Tiffin’s No. 3 doubles pair, 6-3. It all came down to Gilbert’s No. 5 singles match to break the 3-3 tie. After a back-and-forth third set, Gilbert pulled out the win (1-6, 6-4, 7-6) as the Chargers became Great Midwest champions.
