Kuyama has played either No. 1 or No. 2 singles for head coach Doug Linden in his rookie campaign, emerging with a 10-3 record so far in the 2019-20 season.
That season mark was boosted by a perfect 4-0 stretch over the past week as he bested opponents from Adrian, Eckerd, Concordia (N.Y.) and Southern New Hampshire during the Oilers’ Spring Break swing through Florida.
Kuyama played the No. 1 position in the team sweep vs. Adrian, winning 6-0, 6-0 in straight sets.
Against Eckerd, he helped contribute to the doubles team point and then went three sets to emerge as the victor in the No. 2 matchup vs. Pierre-Olivier Lassa. The third set went in Kuyama’s favor by a count of 11-9.
Kuyama also faced some of Concordia’s best in singles as the Oilers dropped the match. The freshman produced another three-set victory and bounced back after dropping the first set.
In another close matchup vs. Southern New Hampshire, Kuyama finished a tiebreaker in the second set to collect his fourth singles win of the week.
