Donathan reeled off five consecutive victories, including three pins in a row, to capture his weight class at the Ohio Intercollegiate Open.
The newcomer scored a first-round victory over No. 5 Justin Crawford of Notre Dame (OH) with an 8-4 decision. He advanced to the next round in the white division to earn a pin in 3:58 vs. Davenport’s Derrick Nicks.
He then pinned his next two opponents to move forward in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds.
Donathan’s first pin came in 2:51 against Thomas Gallagher from tournament host Case Western Reserve. He then methodically got his third pin of the tourney in 5:54 against John Carroll’s Austin Victor.
In the championship bout, Donathan edged Division I Buffalo’s Warren McDougald with a 7-6 decision. It was a very impressive showing for the rookie after the Dragons debuted at the Michigan State Open.
All told, Donathan recorded a total of 26 team points to win his weight class.
