Newell came dangerously close to breaking a conference record set by a former Chargers program great, Rachael Tolsma, the hammer throw at the Hillsdale Invitational.
Newell, a fifth-year senior, had an attempt of 54.01m (177’2”), the best distance around the league this spring.
She now joins Walsh’s Malia Turley as provisional qualifiers from the Great Midwest in the hammer throw. Tolsma still holds the conference record at 54.61m set last year’s outdoor championship meet.
Newell is currently ranked 15th in Division II among all provisional hammer throw qualifiers. This was her first official event with a result in the outdoor season after competing in the indoor conference championship meet in the weight throw.
