Kernell was the top finisher for all of the men’s competitors representing the Great Midwest on Saturday. He finished third out of nearly 200 runners in the 10K distance with a time of 31:26.00.

Walsh finished fourth out of 28 teams from the Great Midwest, GLVC and GLIAC, while securing one of eight at-large selections to the national meet when the field was announced on Monday afternoon.

Even if the Cavaliers hadn’t received an at-large bid, the junior was already locked as an individual qualifier to run at the NCAA Championships hosted by Southern Indiana this year.

Kernell was the runner-up at the Great Midwest Conference Championship as he finished second out of 130 runners.

Kernell recorded a time that officially ranks sixth all-time in conference history since 2012. The fastest 10K time on record was run by Benjamin Tuttle (Cedarville) back in 2015 at the NCAA Championships.

Kernell has excelled as one of the Cavaliers’ top-flight runners this season, recorded three of the top-10 times clocked in the 8K distance around the conference this year.
