INDIANAPOLIS- The Great Midwest Athletic Conference will send 10 wrestlers to the NCAA Division II National Championships. The championship tournament will be held March 13-14 at the Denny Stanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Ashland once again will send a league-high five student-athletes to the national stage, followed by Tiffin with four and Lake Erie with one.
At the regional meet over the weekend, Ashland’s Fletcher Rose and Peyton Lemon found themselves finishing second in their respective weight class. Third place matches were won by Hayden Kuhn (149), Nate Barrett (165), and Sevi Garza (174).
For Tiffin, 125-pounder Anthony Aniciete took home a regional title with wins over West Liberty, Glenville State, and Salem. Aniciete is joined by Nolan Gessler (165) and Emilio Arellano (174) as regional champs. Gessler beat opponents from Bluefield State and Ashland before winning the title in a 7-0 victory over Glenville State. Arellano won in a 4-1 sudden victory over Grand Valley State to claim the title at 174 lbs. Jake Powell rounds out qualifiers from TU. Powell qualified in the 285-pound category with a third place finish at regionals. He won by two pins and a fall on the day.
Lake Erie’s Carsen Richards punched his ticket to nationals after posting wins over Tiffin, Grand Valley State, and Findlay.
A total of 180 participants will compete in the championship. Student-athletes qualified for the championship by placing in the top three of their respective weight classes at one of the six NCAA Super Regional tournaments held February 28 and March 1.
Championship brackets will be available on Friday, March 6 at NCAA.com.
