COLUMBUS, Ohio- Ashland University was officially honored with the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Athletic Training Staff of the Year Award for 2024-25 as part of the league’s annual sport staff meetings conducted this week.

The Athletic Trainers, Sports Information Directors, and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee representatives from the Great Midwest will meet this week in Columbus to prepare for the upcoming academic year.

This is the 12th announcement of the award in the league’s 13-year history and represents the Eagles’ first time winning the award since joining the league in 2021.

“Congratulations to the AU athletic trainers,” said Al King, Ashland Director of Athletics. “Like athletic trainers all around the country, at any level, being an athletic trainer means working a high number of hours and being relied upon to provide information and insight. At Ashland, we have a hard-working, dedicated group that always puts the health and safety of the student-athlete first. I'm proud of them and salute their commitment and dedication to Ashland and their profession”

For the Eagles, their team of seven full-time athletic trainers is led by head Athletic Trainer Josh Wiemels. Wiemels is joined by David Jameyson, Rob Cremeans, Sam Olewiler, Savannah Line, Lydia Barona, and Rachel Kornbluth. The team covers 24 sports and successfully supported not only Ashland, but Great Midwest Student-Athletes as the Eagles hosted six conference championships this past year.
