ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 8 Lady Jackets eliminated top seed Grand Valley State on penalties in the first round of the Midwest Regional.

Cedarville moves on to face No. 4 Maryville in Saturday's second round at 3:00 p.m. EST.

After withstanding a second half onslaught by the seven-time national champion Lakers, it all came down to the shootout for the Jackets.

GVSU went first and shot high on their first and fourth shots. Katie Ulmer, Alli Graves, and Maddy McCort all converted leaving it up to Sophie Browndyke, who tucked the decisive kick just inside the right post.

Cedarville, 12-3-6, jumped on the Lakers with two goals less than two minutes apart in the first half.

Browndyke hammered a 35-yard free kick inside the left post in the 30th minute. Her restart found Ella Webb on the back post in the 32nd for a 2-0 halftime lead.

Grand Valley State, 19-2-1, scored in the 55th and 70th minutes to level the match. The hosts outshot CU 13-0 over the final 45 minutes.

 Quotable: Head Coach Jonathan Meade
"This was an incredible night! I could not be prouder of these young women. They have dealt with a lot of ups and downs this season but have remained steadfast in our "why" and our motivation. When your purpose is to glorify God, it's greater than any low or high moment on the field both disappear over time. He is why we return to the field day in and day out. He sustains us and we are privileged to get to play for an audience of One."

Stinger Notes:
  • Webb's goal was her team-leading seventh.
  • Browndyke also scored on the Lakers with a free kick in the 3-2 setback at home on Sept. 6.
  • GVSU conceded only 11 goals all season and allowed more than one just twice – both against the Lady Jackets.
  • Cedarville advanced to the second round for the third consecutive time.
  • The outcome was the Jackets' first result in six tries vs. Grand Valley State.
