Eagles Take Home Fourth G-MAC Wrestling Title

FINDLAY, Ohio-  Ashland won three weight classes to highlight Saturday’s Great Midwest Athletic Conference Wrestling Championship.
 
The Eagles were victorious at 149 (Hayden Kuhn), 174 (Sevi Garza), and 184 (Peyton Lemon).
 
Ashland scored a total of 159.5 points while nationally-ranked Tiffin and Lake Erie followed with 124.0 and 91.0 points, respectively. Findlay, Davenport, and Thomas More rounded out the team standings.
 
This is Ashland’s fourth conference championship since joining the league in 2021. The Eagles won three weight classes, beginning with Hayden Kuhn who defeated Findlay’s Cade Cass in a 10-3 decision. Sevi Garza repeated as a conference champion , wrestling at 174 this year. Garza defeated Jakob Hurley in a 5-1 decision. Lemon battled Jordan Barnett of Lake Erie at 184, coming out on top in an 8-5 sudden victory.
 
Tiffin’s Cael Woods, Max Shore, Casey Barnett, and Lucas Salmon were all champs in their weight classes. Woods, at 125, went on to earn Wrestler of the Meet honors after upsetting Ashland’s nationally-ranked Luke Acuna in a 12-4 major decision.
 
Lake Erie’s Jack Haskin found himself atop the podium in the 165 weight class after a 4-0 decision over Tiffin’s Emilio Arellano.
 
Cole Thomas of Thomas More took home first place at 141 with a 4-1 decision over Brock Durbin of Ashland.
 
In the heavyweight class, Findlay’s Giulian Bodiu was victorious after four straight victories to reach the championship round. Bodiu took home the gold with an 8-1 decision against Ashland’s Wyatt Bailey.
 
Also recognized was the sport’s Elite 26 Award winner in Tiffin’s Jakob Hurley, a junior law enforcement major. Hurley finished as the runner-up in the 174 weight class.
 
Teams will now continue with regular season competition before Super Regionals, set to take place March 1.
