INDIANAPOLIS- The Great Midwest Athletes of the week for April 14, 2024 are based on student-athlete performance from April 8, 2024- April 13, 2024.
 
Baseball
Pitcher
Johnathan Ray / Tiffin University College/ Jr. / Pitcher / Sylvania, Ohio
Tiffin’s Johnathan Ray earned his first save of the season in a win over Lake Erie. Ray threw a four inning shutout without allowing a single hit and striking out seven batters to close out the game.
 
Player
Matt Magno / Northwood University / Gr. / Catcher / Dublin, Ohio
Matt Magno had a historic weekend for the Timberwolves, finishing the week with a .667 batting average. Magno totaled 15 RBIs including four home runs while registering an on-base percentage of .680 and a slugging percentage of 1.381. He broke the Northwood program record for career hits with 286.
 
Women’s Golf 
Mary Kelly Mulcahy / University of Findlay/ Jr. / Lima, Ohio
The No. 1 golfer in Division II picked up her eighth career win at the North Georgia Bracket Challenge. In a field of nationally-ranked opponents, Mulcahy fired rounds of 73,68,70 to finish -5 and the lead the Oilers to a first-place victory.
 
Kyle Buzaki 
Kyle Buzaki / Walsh University/ Gr. / Stow, Ohio
For the second time this spring, Kyle Buzaki earned the men’s golfer of the week honors after a first-place finish at the Cavalier Classic. Buzaki shot a two day total of -7 with rounds of 67 and 70 to secure the win.
 
Men’s Lacrosse
Defensive:
Austin Hall / Wheeling University / Jr. /Goalkeeper/ Madison, Ala.
Austin Hall from Wheeling University put together a huge defensive effort for the Cardinals to secure a win over Malone. He made 21 saves on the day, facing 41 shots for a save percentage of .512. Hall also added one caused turnover and three ground balls in the effort.
 
Offensive:
Jack Rowe / Wheeling University / So. / Midfield/ Georgetown, Texas
Wheeling swept the men’s lacrosse awards as Jack Rowe earned the offensive player of the week honors. Rowe finished with eight points, including six goals and two assists.
 
Women’s Lacrosse
Defensive:
Olivia Bakowski / University of Findlay/ Sr. /Goalkeeper/ Buffalo, N.Y.
Olivia Bakowski led the Oilers to a 1-0 week with a win over Thomas More. The senior goalkeeper recorded 10 saves while only giving up six goals in the win.
 
Offensive:
Isabella Kelty / Walsh University / Sr. /Attack/ Canfield, Ohio
Isabella Kelty led a Walsh University team to two wins on the week to secure a berth in the Great Midwest Women’s Lacrosse Tournament. Kelty totaled four goals and eight assists for a total of 13 points. She also picked up two ground balls and caused one turnover.
 
Men’s Outdoor Field
Sebastian Tesch / Northwood University / R-Jr. / New Baltimore, Mich.
Northwood’s Sebastian Tesch reset the program record in the hammer throw that he previously broke earlier this season. Tesch threw a mark of 65.67m toss to earn first-place at the Tiffin Track Carnival. Tesch’s throw currently ranks fourth in Division II and first in the G-MAC.
 
Men’s Outdoor Track
Malachi Adams / Tiffin University / Sr. / Evanstown, Ill.
Malachi Adams took home two first-place finishes over the weekend. In the 100m dash, Adams clocked a time of 10.32 that ranks tied for 11th in the country. He then went on to record a 200m time of 20.96 to hit his second provisional mark of the day.
 
Women’s Outdoor Field 
Trista Fintel / University of  Findlay / Jr. / Deshler, Ohio
Trista Fintel finished 6th in the shot put at the Pacific Coast Invitational with a throw of 15.23m that ranks fifth in Division II this season. Fintel then hit two more provisional marks in the discus, recording a mark of 47.66m, and the hammer throw with a 53.52m mark.
 
Women’s Outdoor Track
Shura Ermakov / Hillsdale College / Sr. / Berea, Ohio
Took fifth in the 400 hurdles at the Long Beach State Invite, clocking a time of 59.10. Her time is currently the fastest in D2. Ermakov also ran a provisional time in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.19 seconds that ranks 30th in the nation.
 
Softball
Pitcher:
Joni Russell / Hillsdale College / Jr. / Pitcher / Cable, Ohio
Joni Russell went 3-0 in four starts for the Chargers. Russell shut out Ohio Dominican with 15 strikeouts to become the conference’s all-time leader in strikeouts with 627. She recorded an ERA of 2.12 for the week with 43 strikeouts.
 
Player:
Alexys Antal / University of Findlay / So. / Utility / Topeka, Ind.
Findlay’s Alexys Antal had a historic weekend for the Oilers at the utility position. In the circle, Antal threw the third perfect game in program history. She recorded a complete game with seven strikeouts. She then went on to go 12-for-12 from the plate, including three doubles and three runs scored. The Topeka, Indiana native reach base all 15 times she stepped up to the plate during the week.
 
Men’s Tennis
Arthur  Bord / University of Findlay / Sr. / Bordeaux, France
Arthur Bord went 4-0 on the week, going undefeated at both No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles. In singles play, Bord won his matches 6-2,6-1 against Northwood and 6-3,6-2 against Hillsdale.
 
Women’s Tennis
Danijela Danilovic / Northwood University / So. / Subotica, Serbia
Danilovic went a combined 4-0 for the Timberwolves on the week. She recorded wins against opponents from No. 24 Tiffin and No. 48 Findlay. The sophomore holds an overall record of 26-6 this season, with a 16-1 record in singles.
