INDIANAPOLIS- The Great Midwest Athletes of the week for February 5th, 2024 are based on student-athlete performance from January 29th, 2024- February 4th, 2024.
 
Men’s Basketball
Simon Wheeler / Ashland University / So. / Guard / Detroit, Mich.
Ashland’s Simon Wheeler led the Eagles to a 2-0 week with wins over Northwood and Lake Erie. Wheeler averaged 30.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and 2.5 steals per game. He shot 64.3 percent from the field, 80.0 percent from the free-throw line, and a perfect five-for-five from three. At Lake Erie, Wheeler poured in a career-high  39 points on 12-of-17 from the field. The Detroit, Michigan native is ranked sixth in the conference in scoring at 17.0 points per game
 
Women’s Basketball
Keeley Carter / Trevecca Nazarene University / Sr. / Guard / Lafayette, Tenn.
Carter had an outstanding week for the Trojans, pouring in 31 points in a road win over Ohio Dominican. She then went on to grab 11 rebounds while adding four steals and three assists. In a win over Findlay, she posted a stat line of 18 points, six rebounds, and five assists. For the week, Carter averaged 24.50 points, 8.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.5 steals while shooting 48.5% from the field.
 
Men’s Bowling
Robert Komolsi / Walsh University / Jr. /Mooresville, N.C.
Walsh’s Robert Komolsi was named the G-MAC bowler of the month after outstanding performances during the month of January. At Ohio Bowling Conference #4, Komolsi placed 5th overall and was named to the all-tournament team. He then went on to earn another all-tournament team honor at the Muskie Mash, bowling an average of 223.1
 
Women’s Bowling
Rachel Young / Walsh University / So. / Canton, Ohio
The Cavaliers swept the bowling awards this month as Rachel Young earned women’s bowler of the month. Young finished fifth overall at the Ohio Bowling Conference #4 event to earn all-tournament honors. At the Muskie Mash, she posted an average of 180.4 to finish fifth and add another all-tournament team honor.
 
Men’s Tennis
Ruben Fonga / Tiffin University / Gr./ Nantes, France
Tiffin’s Ruben Fonga had a perfect weekend for the Dragons, going 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles play. At No. 1 singles, Fonga had wins by scores of 6-2,6-2,6-4,6-1,6-1, and 6-3 over opponents from Michigan Tech, Lewis, and McKendree. At No. 1 doubles, he and his partner were victorious 6-2, 6-0, and 6-1.

Women’s Tennis
Maeva Maxch / Tiffin University / Gr. / Herblay, France
Maeva Maxch led Tiffin to a 3-0 weekend with wins over Michigan Tech, McKendree, and Lewis. Maxch went a perfect 3-0 at No. 1 singles with No. 1 doubles with wins by scores of 6-4, 6-2, and 6-2.
 
Men’s Indoor Field
Ben Haas / Hillsdale College / So. / Throws / Clarkston, Mich.
Ben Haas took home second place in the elite division of the weight throw at the Jud Logan Light Giver Invitational over the weekend. He threw a personal best mark of 21.43 meters, which ranks as the third best throw in Division II to date. His 21.43 meter mark also ranks fourth in the Great Midwest record books. Haas also took home sixth place in the shot put.
 
Men’s Indoor Track
T.J. Skinner / Ashland University / Sr. / Sprints / Jefferson, Ohio
T.J. Skinner took home the gold in the 60-meter hurdles, registering a time of 7.87 seconds. His time ranks as No. 4 in Division II.
 
Women’s Indoor Field
Trista Fintel / University of Findlay / Jr. / Throws / Deshler, Ohio
Fintel had a record-breaking weekend at the Jud Logan Light Giver Open. She had a career-best throw of 16.08m to win the event. Fintel’s throw tops the G-MAC record book as the best to date and is currently ranked second at the Division II.
 
Women’s Indoor Track
Alaysia Brooks / Ursuline College / Jr. / Mid-Distance / Cleveland Heights, Ohio
For the second consecutive week, Ursuline’s Alaysia Brooks earned Great Midwest Track Athlete of the Week. Brooks won the 800-meter run in a time of 2:09.12, which is the fastest in the country in D2.
 
STUNT
Mikayla McCoy / Trevecca Nazarene University / Sr. / Mid-Distance / Hazel Green, AL.
Mikayla McCoy took home the first STUNT athlete of the week for the 2024 season. McCoy led the Trojans to a 4-0 in their opening weekend. She was the highest-rated player on Trevecca for each of their four games. McCoy posted an average power ranking of 51.75.
 
Wrestling
Daniel Beemer / Ashland University / Gr. / 184 lbs. / Ottawa, Ohio
Daniel Beemer led the Eagles to a win over No. 19 ranked Tiffin and RV Findlay over the weekend. The No. 2 ranked wrestler at 184 defeated opponents via technical fall, 21-5 and 18-2.
