INDIANAPOLIS—With the tournament semifinals scheduled to take place later this evening, the Great Midwest All-Conference Volleyball Teams were announced following a vote by the league’s coaches.
The coaches’ vote determined a total of 24 student-athletes on this year’s all-conference teams. Each team consists of two outside/right hitters, two middle blockers, two setters, and two libero/defensive specialists.
Individual awards include Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year, Coach of the Year, and the Great Midwest Elite 26 award winner.
The Elite 26 award winner was announced at Ashland’s Kenzie McConnell, a senior Exercise Science major. The Elite 26 award recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete at the conference championship level in his or her sport while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers.
Northwood’s Sydney Hasenfratz was voted Great Midwest Player of the Year. Hasenfratz was named Great Midwest Athlete of the Week three times this season. She holds the league’s highest hitting percentage at .391 through 98 sets. Hasenfratz ranks in the top five in kills per set with 3.62 while totaling 355 this season.
Ashland’s Samantha Young is the Freshman of the Year. Young has appeared in every match this season and averaged nearly 3.00 points per set. She ranks in the top 30 in the conference in kills (2.52), aces (.29), digs (2.35), and points (2.99).
Northwood’s David Shumaker was voted by his peers as the 2024 Coach of the Year. In his ninth year at the helm of Northwood Volleyball holds a 117-121 overall record. Shumaker and the Timberwolves finished the regular season with a 21-8 record and cracked the latest regional rankings at No. 10.
