Eagles Take Home Third G-MAC Wrestling Title

TIFFIN, Ohio- Ashland won a tournament-high four weight classes to highlight Saturday’s Great Midwest Athletic Conference Wrestling Championship.
 
The Eagles were victorious at 165 (Sevi Garza), 174 (Nate Barrett), 184 (Daniel Beemer), and 197 (Walker Uhl).
 
Ashland scored a total of 109.0 points while nationally-ranked Tiffin and Lake Erie followed with 102.5 and 89.5 points, respectively. Findlay, Thomas More, and Kentucky Wesleyan rounded out the team standings.
 
This is Ashland’s third conference championship since joining the conference in 2021. The Eagles won four straight weight classes, beginning with Sevi Garza who defeated Findlay’s Gary Nelson in a 15-6 major decision. Nate Barrett, Daniel Beemer, and Walker Uhl all repeated as champions in their weight class. Barrett battled David Davis from Tiffin until a fall at 4:34. At 184, Beemer won in a technical fall 26-10 followed by a Walker Uhl victory via fall at 6:57.
 
Tiffin’s Anthony Aniciete at 125 and Zack Donathan at 141 were both champs in their weight classes. Aniciete edged out defending champion Graham Shore while Donathan dueled with Lake Erie’s Carsen Richards in a 4-3 decision.
 
Wrestler of the Meet Jack Haskin went 3-0 on the day to win the 157 lbs. weight class. He defeated opponents via majority decision 12-1, technical fall 19-0, and a 5-0 decision to take home the gold. In addition to Haskin, teammates Ryan Wehner (133) and Christian Small (149) also won their respective weight classes to help the Storm earn a third-place team finish.
 
In the heavy weight class, Thomas More’s Dalton Mayer was victorious with three stragiht falls on the day. He registered falls of 1:09, 0:44, and 0:32 to find himself atop the podium to end the day.
 
Also recognized was the sport’s Elite 26 Award winner in Findlay’s Gavin Ritter, a senior education major. Ritter, typically competing at 133 lbs., was in the starting lineup for the Roughnecks and finished runner-up at the tournament.
 
Teams will now continue with regular season competition before Super Regionals, set to take place  March 2.
