Great Midwest Athletes of the Week (Sept. 5)

INDIANAPOLIS- The Great Midwest Athletes of the Week for September 5th, 2023 are based on student-athlete performance from August 28th, 2023- September 4th, 2023.
 
Football
 
Defense: Michael Powers / Ohio Dominican University / RS Jr. / Linebacker / West Mansfield, Ohio
Ohio Dominican’s Michael Powers was named Defensive Player of the Week after proving a dominant force for the Panthers against Notre Dame College. Powers led all defenders with 14 tackles, including six solo tackles. He also had one sack and two tackles for loss on the day.  
 
Offense: Kason Martin / Tiffin University / Gr. / Quarterback / Manvel, Texas
Kason Martin of Tiffin University led the Dragon offense to a 79-14 win over McKendree. He completed 17 of 25 passes for 279 yards with no interceptions. Martin recorded three passing touchdowns with passes of 24, 43, and 35 yards.
 
Special Teams: Grant Woodfin / Tiffin University / So. / Kicker / Galena, Ohio
Tiffin’s kicker Grant Woodfin had a record-breaking day for the Dragons in their season opener. He accounted for 13 of Tiffin’s 79 points, going 10-for-10 on PAT and kicking a 26-yard field goal. His 10 extra points shattered Tiffin’s and tied the Great Midwest single-game record for kicked extra points.
 
Men’s Cross Country
Talel Khalfi / Tiffin University / Fr. / Kairouan, Tunisia
Talel Khalfi led Tiffin to a first-place finish at the Beaver Dam Invite over the weekend. He finished first in the men’s 6K with a time of 17:59.91, nearly 33 seconds ahead of the second-place runner.
 
Women’s Cross Country
Charlotte Campbell / Tiffin University / Jr. / Newark, Ohio
The Dragons swept cross country awards this week as Charlotte Campbell claimed the women's cross country Athlete of the Week. Campbell led the Dragons to a third-place team finish. Individually, she finished first out of 61 runners with a time of 18:38.71.
 
Men’s Soccer
Defense:  Giuliano Palma / Trevecca Nazarene University / Gr. / Goalkeeper / Naples, Italy
In his first start in goal, Giuliano Palma recorded a shutout in a 4-0 victory over Shorter University. Palma totaled three saves in 90 minutes of play.
 
Offense: Marlon Grossmann / Trevecca Nazarene University / Sr. / Forward / Schwaebisch Gmuend, Germany 
Marlon Grossman led the Trojans to a 1-1 record over the weekend. In two matches, he totaled seven points, including three goals and one assist. Grossmann currently leads the league in points and goals.
 
Women’s Soccer
Defense: Mackenzie Simon / Ashland University / Sr. / Goalkeeper / Olmstead Falls, Ohio
Ashland’s Mackenzie Simon registered two shutouts to help the Eagles improve to 2-0 to start the year. Simon’s shutouts included six saves against No. 8 Grand Valley State. She is currently ranked second in the league with 12 total saves.
 
Offense: Katie Corrigan / Walsh University / So. / Defense/ Cincinnati, Ohio
Katie Corrigan led the Cavaliers to an undefeated weekend to start the year. She recorded two goals, including one game-winning goal in 104 minutes of play.
 
Volleyball North Division
Defense: Arora Levengood / Walsh University / Jr. / Libero / Bolivar, Ohio
Walsh’s Arora Levengood proved a defensive force for the 4-0 Cavaliers over the weekend. Levengood totaled 68 digs and a .930 reception percentage, while adding nine assists and six aces. She was named to the All-Tournament Team at Frostburg State and is currently second in the conference in digs per set at 5.23.
 
Offense: Sydney Hassenfratz / Northwood University / So. / Middle Blocker / Clarkston, Mich.
Hassenfratz led the Timberwolves to a 3-1 weekend to open the 2023 season. She averaged 3.12 kills and 0.88 blocks per set at a .453 hitting percentage. The Clarkston, Michigan native finished the weekend with 53 total kills and 15 blocks, while also being named to the All-Tournament Team.
 
Volleyball South Division
Defense: Kelsey Shoup / Ohio Dominican University / Sr. / Libero / Dalton, Ohio
Senior libero Kelsey Shoup led the Panthers to a 3-1 weekend. She totaled 65 digs at 5.00 digs per set. In the conference, Shoup currently ranks fourth in digs.
 
Offense: Bailey Ruth / Ashland University / Jr. / Middle Blocker / Marion, Ohio
Ashland’s Bailey Ruth registered a .577 hitting percentage as the Eagles went 4-0 to start the year. Ruth totaled 46 kills, three digs, 13 block assists, while only recording five errors.
