NORTH CANTON, Ohio- The No. 2 seed Ashland University won their first Great Midwest Men's Basketball title Saturday evening with a 82-78 win over No. 5 Malone University. Freshman Simon Wheeler led the Eagles with 22 points and six assists, earning him a spot on the All-Tournament team.
Ashland (22-9), ranked sixth in the most recent Midwest rankings, will play in the NCAA Tournament, and awaits its postseason assignment.
Both teams fought hard as there were 10 lead changes throughout the contest.
The Eagles enjoyed a 59.3 FG% while converting nine Pioneer turnovers to 14 points.
Brandon Haraway, the league’s Player of the Year, added 14 points for Ashland and earned tournament MVP. Maceo Williams joins Haraway and Wheeler as an All-Tournament selection, scoring 15 points in the victory.
Justin Miller posted a game-high 23 points, shooting 8-18 on the day. Miller is joined by Bo Myers on the All-Tournament team. Myers finished with 17 points, including five treys.
Walsh’s Garrison Keeslar and Hillsdale’s Jack Gohlke rounds out the All-Tournament selections.
Hillsdale and Walsh are ranked in the most recent Midwest Regional rankings and will look to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, while the Eagles will automatically qualify.
