INDIANAPOLIS—The final four teams left in the men’s soccer bracket are preparing to continue their journey through the postseason as the Great Midwest Athletic Conference men’s soccer all-conference team and individual award winners were announced Wednesday afternoon.
The league’s head coaches voted student-athletes to either first team or second team. Additionally, five athletes are chosen for individual awards as well as one Coach of the Year.
Tiffin University earned regular season championship honors for the second consecutive season, finishing with a conference record of 10-1-3. The Dragons are led by 2023 Coach of the Year Rudy Brownell, who has led the team to an overall record of 12-2-3. Brownell coached three first-team all-conference selections, including Defensive Player of the Year Amara Kamara. Kamara has led a Tiffin defense that ranks at the top of the conference in goals-allowed average with 1.00 per game. Individually, Kamara has started in 17 games for the Dragons, scoring two goals and adding one assist. Kamara is joined by teammates Davide Frezzi and Kai Yamazaki as first-team selections. Frezzi joins Kamara as a defenseman. He’s recorded 10 points this season, including two goals and six assists. Frezzi’s six assists rank fifth in the conference. Yamazaki was voted a first-team midfielder, starting in all 17 games for the Dragons. Tiffin is set to face Ashland Thursday afternoon.
No. 2 Lake Erie landed three student-athletes as first-team all-conference selections. Tomas Fernandez was selected as a first-team defender after starting in 18 games and recording five assists for the Storm. Fernandez is joined by graduate forward Tom Akinola and freshman midfielder Aaron Garrote. Akinola started in all 19 games for Lake Erie, registering eight goals and two assists for 18 points this season. In his freshman season, Aaron Garrote totaled 10 points, including three goals and four assists. The trio has led Lake Erie to an overall record of 11-5-3.
In their first year competing in the Great Midwest, Thomas More advanced to the semifinal round as the No. 3 seed, led by Freshman of the Year Karim Slim. Slim was voted as the league’s top freshman after scoring five goals this season on 12 shots on goal. Slim also added one assist to finish the year with 11 points. The Saints will take on No. 2 Lake Erie Thursday morning.
Defending G-MAC tournament champions Ashland University advanced to the semifinal after a 3-0 win over Walsh. The Eagles are led by the conference’s leading scorer in Vander Rocha. Rocha was voted a first-team all-conference selection after scoring a league-high 11 goals this season. Rocha also ranks third in points at 27, including five assists.
Cedarville’s Jabari Gray was voted as the league’s top goalkeeper with a total of seven shutouts. Gray finished the regular season with a 1.043 goals-against average and a .727 save percentage. His seven shutouts rank tied for 15
th at the Division II level.
Coaches voted Matteo Napoletano as the Offensive Player of the Year after leading the conference in points during the regular season. Napoletano tabbed 25 points, which included ten goals and five assists. He also leads the G-MAC in game-winning goals with four this season.
Oliver Jarvis and Robert Gjelaj of Northwood as well as Lewis Matton of Walsh round out individuals as first-team selections. Jarvis scored ten goals and had three assists for a total of 23 points on the year. Gjelaj was voted as a first-team goalkeeper after leading the league in saves with 97 this season and 6.06 per game. Walsh’s Lewis Matton led the Cavaliers to an 8-6-4 overall record and scored a team-high nine goals.
The sport’s Elite 26 Award winner was Ashland’s Teddy Togliotti, who is a Biology major. The Elite 26 Award recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete at the conference championship level in his or her sport while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or peers. Togliotti had the highest qualifying GPA from teams that qualified for the conference tournament as the Eagles were seeded at No.4.
