INDIANAPOLIS—The coaches’ votes are officially in as the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Football All-Conference Team along with individual awards was released Thursday afternoon.
Student-athletes were voted first or second team with specific allocation of numbers by position on offense, defense, and special teams. Nine individual awards were voted on as well.
Tiffin captured the Great Midwest regular season title, becoming the first G-MAC football team to go undefeated with an 11-0 record. The Dragons earned the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye in the NCAA Division II Super Region One.
Looking ahead, Ashland University will represent the Great Midwest in America’s Crossroads Bowl, set to take place on Friday, Dec. 1 in Hammond, Ind.
Great Midwest Co-Players of the Year was announced as Hillsdale’s Michael Herzog and Ohio Dominican’s Eddie Miller-Garrett.
Herzog, a senior from Ontario, has had a record-breaking year at the running back position. He currently leads the conference in rushing yards with 121.2 yards per game and over 1,000 yards this season. Herzog’s 1,333 rushing yards ranks second in the conference record books for a single-season. He scored a career-high five touchdowns in a win over Ohio Dominican last weekend, shattering the previous single-game record of four. At the Division II level, Herzog ranks in the Top 10 in several statistical categories including rushing yards (1,333), all-purpose yards (1,894), rushing touchdowns (21), rushing yards per game (121.2), and scoring (11.5).
Eddie Miller-Garrett also earned a share of the Player of the Year honors as a defensive lineman. Miller-Garrett led the league in tackles for loss with 23 this season, 18 of which were solo. His 23 tackles for loss ranks first in Division II. The senior out of Newark, NJ., also leads the G-MAC in sacks, averaging nearly one per game (0.95) and 10.5 on the year. His 10.5 sacks this season is ranked second overall in Great Midwest history for a single season and tied for eighth in Division II.
Earning Great Miwest Offensive Player of the Year honors was Findlay’s Mike Rigerman, a senior from Arcade, N.Y. He totaled 739 reception yards at the tight end position, while connecting on eight touchdowns and averaging 12.5 yards per catch. Rigerman ranks third in the league in receiving yards with 67.2 per game.
Cam Hollobaugh from Walsh University was voted Great Midwest Defensive Player of the Year. The junior averaged a league-high 91 tackles at 8.3 per game. Of Hollobaugh’s 91 tackles, he tabbed 54 solo and 37 assisted. Hollobaugh added 11.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, and three interceptions on the year.
The Great Midwest Offensive Lineman of the Year was the University of Findlay’s Michael Jerrell. Jerrell made 11 appearances this season at the right tackle position. He was a member of an offensive line that allowed the team to rush for 176.6 yards per game. Jerrell helped the Oilers churn out 390.0 yards of offense per contest.
Winning the Defensive Lineman of the Year honors is Tiffin’s Robert Holtz. Holtz totaled 42.0 tackles this season, while routinely facing double-teams from offenses. He averaged 3.8 tackles per game and led a Tiffin defense that ranks second in the conference in sacks with 33 this season.
Anthony Harris from Walsh University and Evan Brown from Thomas More University were voted Co-Freshmen of the Year by coaches. Harris, a native of Chicago, led the Cavaliers in receiving yards in his college debut. Harris registered 610 total yards at 55.45 per game. He scored two touchdowns through 11 games played. Brown, also a wide receiver, had a strong showing during his freshman campaign. The Lexington, KY. Native totaled 414 yards and two touchdowns this season. He averaged 16.56 yards per reception and 51.75 receiving yards per game. Both Brown and Harris rank in the Top 10 of the conference in receiving yards.
The Great Midwest Elite 26 Award winner was Tiffin's Jordan Speller, a senior majoring in Education. The Elite 26 Award recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete at the conference championship level in his or her sport while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or peers.
Tiffin’s Cris Reisert was voted by his peers as the Great Midwest Coach of the Year. Reisert led the Dragons to an undefeated regular season of 11-0 and the top spot in Super Regional One. In his fifth season at the helm of Dragon football, Reisert has posted an overall record of 40-10, including three G-MAC titles and three berths to the NCAA Division II Tournament. This season, Reisert landed 15 student-athletes on the all-conference list, including 10 first-team selections.
