INDIANAPOLIS--The Great Midwest Athletes of the week for January  16, 2023 are based on student-athlete performance from January 10, 2023-January 15, 2023.
 
Men’s Basketball
Peter Kalthoff / Hillsdale College / Sr. / Forward / Hillsdale, Mich.
Peter Kalthoff helped the No. 10 ranked Chargers improve to 16-1 on the year. Through two games, he averaged 21.5 points and 7.5 rebounds. Kalthoff poured in a career-high 29 points and a double-double in a conference win over Northwood. He currently ranks 12th in the conference in scoring at 13.3 PPG.
 
Women’s Basketball
Sydney Mills / Hillsdale College / Sr. / Forward / DeWitt, Mich.
Through two games, Hillsdale’s Sydney Mills nearly averaged a double-double with 11 points per game and 9.5 rebounds. Against Ursuline, Mills poured in 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. In a conference win over Ohio Dominican, she recorded a team-high seven rebounds and added eight points. Mills also became the 20th player in program history to surpass the 1,000 career-point. Currently, she leads the Great Midwest in rebounds with 10.8 per game.
 
Men’s Indoor Field
Jacob McPherson / Tiffin University/ Jr. / Thrower / Rochester, NY.
Jacob McPherson is this week’s Male Indoor Field Athlete of the Week after hitting an NCAA DII Provisional mark in the shot put. McPherson recorded a mark of 17.85 meters, which ranks as the fourth best throw in the nation at the DII level. He also recorded a weight throw mark of 20.74 meters, another provisional mark and the second-best throw in the country.
 
Men’s Indoor Track
Camren Warner / Trevecca Nazarene University / Sr. / Distance / Murfeesboro, Tenn.
Warner earned a first-place finish in the 3000M at the Spartan Invitational in Staten Island over the weekend. He recorded a time of 8:29.78, which is currently the fastest time in the conference and second best in program history. On Saturday, Warner finished 10th in the mile in a strong field of runners at The Armory.
 
Women’s Indoor Field
Trista Fintel / University of Findlay / So. / Throws / Deshler, Ohio.
Findlay’s Trista Fintel is this week’s Great Midwest Field Athlete of the Week after winning the Shot Put at the Hillsdale Tri-Meet over the weekend. She recorded an NCAA provisional mark of 15.09 meters, the best throw in the country to date at the Divison II level.
 
Women’s Indoor Track
Kylie Ray / University of Findlay / Jr. / Sprints / Pinckney, Mich.
Kylie Ray found herself atop the podium in both the 200M and 60M hurdles. She recorded a 200M time of 25.66, which earned her first-place against runners from Ashland and Hillsdale. In the 60M hurdles, Ray registered an NCAA provisional time of 8.78, which ranks as the second fastest time in the country.
 
Men’s Swimming & Diving
Daniel Garcia / University of Findlay/ Jr. / Bucaramanga, Colombia
Daniel Garcia was named the Great Midwest Men’s Swimming & Diving Athlete of the week after a stellar performance against nationally-ranked opponents UIndy and Grand Valley. Garcia earned a first-place finish in the 100 (55.53) and 200 Breast (2:03.94). He also placed second in the 200 Individual Medley (1:51.07) as well as the 200 Medley Relay.
 
Women’s Swimming & Diving
Joanna Burnham / Hillsdale College / So. / Sycamore, Ill.
Joanna Burnham finished first in several events over the weekend. In the 400 Individual Medley, Burnham recorded a time of 4:44.88, which earned her a first place finish. She also won the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:09.84.
 
Wrestling
Daniel Beemer / Ashland University / R-Jr. / 184 lbs. / Ottawa, Ohio.
The No. 6 ranked wrestler at 184 pounds recorded several wins against West Liberty and Lake Erie this past weekend. He won on a major decision (14-5, 27-7) over West Liberty’s Chance Morgan. At the Midwest Duals, Beemer defeated Lake Erie’s Jordan Barnett 23-8.
