OWENSBORO, Kentucky - The Findlay men's and women's track teams hold leads in the team standings after the first day of the Great Midwest Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Kentucky Wesleyan. Five champions were crowned, including multiple league champion distance runner Noah Fisher from Findlay.
WEDNESDAY'S CHAMPIONS
- Kelsey Kinsley of Ashland won the women's hammer throw with a mark of 57.39m, her personal best and the best toss in the Great Midwest this season.
- Findlay's Savannah Amato is the league champion in the women's pole vault with a 4.14m vault, edging Walsh's Kelsey Hartsock (4.04m). Findlay posted three of the top four performances in the event for 20.5 team meet points.
- Austin Combs of Findlay won the men's hammer throw at 68.51m, his best throw of the season and the top mark in the conference. Ashland's Brent Fairbanks, Walsh's Jesse Houle and Findlay's Max Prenger each bested the NCAA Provisional Mark (56.86).
- As the day turned to night, Hannah Thompson of Findlay claimed the 10,000m title with a run of 34:47.21. She was pushed by Cedarville's Alayna Ackley (34:58.07). In all six runners from the event met the provisional standard.
- Wednesday's 'track-tion' concluded with Fisher winning the men's 10,000m in 29:48. He was last year's 5,000 and 10,000m champion, last fall's cross country champion and held serve Wednesday night.
Ashland's Emma Liberatore was among the first day's top performers, winning three heptathlon events (100m hurdles, 200m, high jump) and placing second in the shot put. Walsh's Max McVicker took the 100m and 400m races in the decathlon, while Findlay's Gabriel Clement (high jump), Tiffin's Josiah Gadson (long jump) and Walsh's Conner Hluch (shot put) each won an event.
Emma Liberatore of Ashland won three of the day's four heptathlon events.
