Basketball champions were crowned and spring sports are in full swing as
10 athletes from Great Midwest Athletic Conference schools captured athlete of the week honors for the week ending March 6.
Below is a recap of each award winner and a complete list of this week's honorees.
Men's Basketball
Tim Smith, Jr. - Walsh / Soph. / Cleveland, Ohio
Smith was the Cavs' leading scorer as Walsh won the men's basketball championship over the weekend. The sophomore averaged 14.5 points on 66.7 percent shooting in the two games. He scored 13 points on 5-for-6 shooting in the semfinal win over Findlay and then totaled 16 in the title game vs. Cedarville.
Women's Basketball
Annie Roshak - Ashland / Jr. / North Canton, Ohio
Roshak led Ashland to the women's basketball tournament title over the weekend, averaging 25.5 points on 64.7 percent shooting with 6.0 rebounds in a pair of victories. In Friday's semifinal, she exploded for 32 points and 10 rebounds vs. Findlay, and then added 19 points in Saturday's championship game win.
Baseball Player of the Week
Lewis Beals - Hillsdale / Soph. / Mason, Michigan
Beals went 11-for-17 at the plate and smashed five home runs in a four-game series vs. McKendree. The outfielder totaled eight extra-base hits and drove in 10 runs as Hillsdale won a pair of games. Beals hit for the cycle on Saturday to lead Hillsdale to a 12-7 win.
Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Anthony Berrios, Jr. - Lake Erie / Jr. / Amherst, Ohio
Berrios threw six shutout innings and struck out 10 for LEC against Notre Dame College. He allowed just three hits and now has 15 strikeouts over 9.0 innings on the young season.
Softball Player of the Week
Casey Bertke - Cedarville / Soph. / Cardington, Ohio
Bertke was a standout at the plate and in the circle, going 2-0 with seven strikeouts over 18 innings while also batting .600 (6-for-10). She hit two homers and drove in three to lead Cedarville to a successful 5-1 week.
Softball Pitcher of the Week
Erin Kapteyn - Hillsdale / Soph. / Delton, Michigan
Kapteyn didn't allow an earned run during HC's 5-1 win over Quincy. She struck out six in the complete game effort.
Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Brennan Cimpeanu - Hillsdale / Soph. / Troy, Michigan
Cimpeanu dominated at No. 1 singles for HC, winning 6-0, 6-2 over Lake Superior State. He also won at doubles and is now 13-3 in singles play this season.
Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Alessandra Maganuco - Tiffin / Grad / Gela, Italy
Maganuco led Tiffin by going 4-0 in doubles play over the weekend. She also won both of her singles matches as Tiffin went 2-2 on its spring trip.
Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week
Connor Calmbacher - Alderson Broaddus / Grad / Wheeling, West Va.
Calmbacher had four goals and two assists for six points for ABU against Lincoln Memorial. He put nine of his 13 shots on goal while accounting for half the team's scoring.
Men's Lacrosse Defender of the Week
Joshua Wolford - Wheeling / Fr. / Spring Mills, West Va.
Wolford was clutch in net for Wheeling, totaling 15 saves in a Wheeling win over the weekend. He came up with a huge save in the overtime to preserve the win, which was Wheeling's first at home since 2018.
Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week
Daniela Carey - Tiffin / Sr. / White Rock, B.C., Canada
Carey was the top Tiffin player over the weekend, scoring three goals over two games. She also added three ground balls while forcing three turnovers.
