ASHLAND, Ohio
- In their first Great Midwest season, perennial national power Ashland has stayed a step ahead. The Eagles, the regular season champ and tourney host, claimed the 2022 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Championship with a 73-63 win over No. 2 seed Walsh on Satuday.

Hallie Heidemann scored 21 points and Annie Roshak 19. Walsh's Sha Carter, the Great Midwest Player of the Year, finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds.

"I'm really proud of our team," Ashland head coach Kari Pickens said. "We've had some ups and downs this year but I thought we played tough and together today and beat a really good team."

Ashland (28-2) and Walsh (26-4) split two close games in the regular season and AU took control of the rubber match early. The Eagles ripped off a 9-0 run early in the game to lead 12-4. WU managed just six points in the game's first 7:47 and soon Ashland would have a 32-13 lead. Walsh battled back to within eight later in the game but wouldn't come any closer.

The second quarter was the decisive period of the game, with AU holding a 26-15 advantage. Walsh outscored Ashland in the third and fourth quarters to stay in the game.

Ashland is ranked fourth nationally and second in the Midwest Region.
