By: Great Midwest Conference

Walsh's Sha Carter was named 2022 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year in a voting of the league's women's basketball coaches. Kari Pickens, the head coach of regular season champ Ashland, was picked as the coach of the year.

Hillsdale's Peighton Nelson was voted by the coaches as the league's freshman of the year and Nikki Weber of Malone earned the Elite 25 Award winner for women's basketball for her academic excellence.

Carter led the conference with 19.0 points per game while ranking second in field goal percentage and fourth in rebounding. She averaged a league-best 19.5 points and was third in rebounding in conference play. Pickens, in Ashland's first year in the Great Midwest, coached the AU to a 21-1 conference record and a 26-2 regular season mark. Pickens's squad enjoyed an average margin of victory of 20.3 points and will be the top seed and host in this weekend's Great Midwest Women's Basketball Championship. Nelson was named the top freshman after starting every game this season for Hillsdale, averaging 8.4 points and ranking fourth in the conference in assists in league play.

In all, four different players from Ashland earned all-conference honors. Karlee Pireu and Annie Roshak were voted first team and Hallie Heidemann and Macy Spielman were second-team picks. In addition to Carter, regular season runner-up Walsh saw Morgan McMillen (first team) and Lexie Scarton (second) earn all-conference notice.

Four teams will meet in Ashland this weekend aiming for the Great Midwest title. Top seed Ashland hosts No. 4 Findlay Friday at 5:30 p.m. No. 2 Walsh and No. 3 Kentucky Wesleyan play in the second semifinal. The championship game is at Ashland Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. Tickets for the championship can be purchased via Ashland HERE.
