ASHLAND, Ohio - Walsh's NCAA tourney run came to an end Monday night in a 64-61 loss to Grand Valley State (30-2).
Ashland was the top seed and host and Walsh earned a 72-62 upset win over AU Saturday night to advance to the regional final. But the quest for an Elite Eight berth fell one possession short to GVSU, the No. 2 seed and the 6th-ranked team in the WBCA Coaches Poll.
The battle Monday night featured 12 lead changes and Walsh (28-5) actually led for the majority of the night. Leading 28-27 at halftime despite a slow first quarter, Walsh was owned a 9-point lead early before Grand Valley State battled back with a +7 scoring edge in the second and third quarters.
Walsh led 51-44 with 5:15 left in the game before a decisive 14-4 run by GVSU gave the Lakers the lead for good.
