Great Midwest Athletes of the Week (Oct. 17)

INDIANAPOLIS-- The Great Midwest Athletes of the week for October 17th, 2022 are based on student-athlete performance from October 11th, 2022- October 16th , 2022.
 
Football
Defense: Jeffrey Barnett/ Ashland University/ Jr. / Defensive End / Solon, Ohio
Jeffrey Barnett has been named the Great Midwest Defensive Athlete of the Week after a dominant performance against Ohio Dominican. He led a the defense that allowed just 21 second-half yards in a comeback win. Barnett posted an impressive nine tackles and two tackles for loss. The Junior Defensive End also had two sacks to help the No. 6 ranked Eagles improve to 6-0.

Offense: Michael Herzog / Hillsdale College / Sr. / Tailback / Windsor, Ontario
Michael Herzog had a record-breaking performance in the Charger’s win over Northwood University. He rushed for 159 yards and scored three touchdowns on 23 carries. Herzog’s stats is the best rushing performance since 2019. With 680 total yards, Herzog ranks second in the conference in rushing and No. 24 at the national level.
 
Special Teams: Austin Snyder/ University of Findlay / So. / Kicker / Groveport , Ohio
Austin Snyder is this week’s Special Teams Athlete of the Week. Snyder was 3-for-3 from field goal range and 5-for-5 in extra points. He accounted for 14 of Findlay’s 44 points in a victory over Kentucky Wesleyan.
 
Men’s Golf
Connor Curry / Malone University / Gr. / Mount Vernon, Ohio
Connor Curry has been named the Men’s Golf Athlete of the week for the second consecutive week. Curry tied for second overall at the Cedarville Invitational. He shot -2 with a total score of 214 through 54 holes.

Women’s Golf
Jill Schmitmeyer/ University of Findlau / Sr. / St. Marys, Ohio
Schmitmeyer helped the Oilers earn runner-up status at the LeeAnn Noble Memorial, which included several nationally-ranked programs. Individually, she tied for sixth with rounds of 73, 71, and 73 for a grand total of 217 (+1). Schmitmeyer also made 12 birdies, which was the most in the field.
 
Men’s Soccer
Defense: Davide Frezzi/ Tiffin University / Defender / So. / Ancona, Italy
The Dragons improved to 7-2-1 in the Great Midwest after Davide Frezzi led a defense that posted two more shutouts. Frezzi and the Dragons allowed only two shots total and no shots on goal in their win over Findlay. The defender also scored a goal against Ohio Dominican while leading the defensive effort that allowd only four shots total and only one on goal.
 
Offense: Chewe Mukuka / Tiffin University / Right Wing / Jr. / Lusaka, Zambia
Mukuka finished the week with three goals and two assists in two matches. He scored two goals against Findlay and had a goal and two assists against Ohio Dominican. Chewe Mukuka and the Dragons set a new program Division II record for goals in a game with a 9-0 win over Ohio Dominican.
 
Women’s Soccer
Defense: Andrea Everett/ Northwood University / Goalkeeper / Sr. / Hartland, Mich.
Andrea Everett recorded an impressive 10 saves and a .5 Goals Against Average this week. Everett became the all-time winningest goalie in program history in the Timberwolves’ victory over Ohio Dominican. She made three saves in her fourth shutout of the season.
 
Offense: Madison Mlsna /University of Findlay / Forward / Sr. / Findlay, Ohio
Madison Mlsna led the Oilers in two victories over conference opponents. She scored one goal and had on assists in wins over Tiffin and Kentucky Wesleyan. Mlsna ranks ninth in the Great Midwest in assists per game.
 
Men’s Swimming & Diving
Amar Sapcanin / Ashland University / Sr. / Sarajevo, Boznia and Herzegovina
Amar Sapcanin was a top-performer at the Oberlin Early Bird Invitational. Sapcanin won in the men’s 200 breastsroke with a time of 2:10.81 as well as the 100 breastsroke at 59.53 seconds. He was also a member of the 400 medley relay and 200 medley relay that placed first at the invitational.
 
Women’s Swimming & Diving
Abby Locke / Ashland University / Sr. / Springboro, Ohio
The senior helped Ashland secure wins over Notre Dame and Oberlin College. She earned wins in the 200 individual medley, 100 breastroke, and 200 breastroke. The reigning Great Midwest Athletic Conference women’s Swimmer of the Meet recorded times of 2:14.65, 1:08.27, and 2:29.98. Locke also placed third in the women’s 400 free relay.
 
Volleyball 
North Division
Defense: Macy McCauley/ Malone University/ Outside Hitter / So. / North Canton, Ohio
Macy McCauley has been named the North Division’s Athlete of the Week for back-to-back weeks. McCauley finished the crossover with 69 total digs at 5.75 digs per set. Overall, the Pioneers went 1-2 over the weekend.
 
Offense: Karoline Shelton / Hillsdale College/ Outside Hitter / Sr. / Shawnee, Kan.
Shelton totaled 54 kills at the Midwest Region Crossover. She tied her career-high with 22 kills against Lewis. The Outside Hitter also contributed 58 total digs as well as double-doubles in each of the three matches.
 
South Division
Defense: Anna Krikke/ Ashland University / Middleback / Sr. /North Royalton, Ohio
Anna Krikke helped the Eagles go 2-1 at the Crossover event. She registered 26 kills, one assist, two digs, and 21 total blocks in 11 sets. In a loss to Quincy, Krikke set the school record with 11 block assists.
 
Offense: Zoey Peck/ Ashland University / Setter / Gr. / Homeworth, Ohio
Fifth-year Zoey Peck dished out an impressive 127 assists at 11.55 per set. She stuffed the stat sheet with four kills, one service ace, 25 digs, and seven block assists through three matches.
