INDIANAPOLIS
– The Owensboro Track & Field Complex and Kentucky Wesleyan College is ready to welcome student-athletes participating in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships starting on Wednesday.

The three-day meet to celebrate the completion of the outdoor regular season is a welcome sight after last year's outdoor conference championship segment was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

These student-athletes are looking to aim high in Owensboro with hopes to either improve upon auto locks or enhance their chances of making the NCAA Championships set for May 27-29 in Allendale, Mich., hosted by Grand Valley State.

Ticketing for the event includes school-specific allocations with a capacity of 600 spectators inside the facility. Each institution is responsible for deciding how to allocate their allotment. Due to logistical challenges, a video stream will not be available for the championship meet this week.

Multiple Great Midwest records have already been set during the 2021 spring in the men's side, including Findlay's Xavier Marable in the 400-meter dash, Malone's Noah Schaub in the 5K, Tiffin's Cameron Burrows in the long jump, Tiffin's Lloyd McCurdy in the triple jump and Tiffin's Garrett Wilson in the javelin throw.

The same goes for the women with new conference records already established in the 10K by Malone's Hannah Thompson, the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays courtesy of Hillsdale, the high jump by 2019 outdoor national champ Marisa Gwinner of Tiffin, the pole vault by Austin Peay transfer Savannah Amato suiting up for Findlay and the javelin throw by Walsh's Romi Smith.

The top 3 place winners in each event will receive automatic all-conference honors while the top point scorer for individual awards for Track/Field/Freshman of the Meet will also be recognized at the end in the ceremony.

Several very familiar names with outdoor eligibility are back in the field including Findlay's thrower Austin Combs and Tiffin's sprinter Jonte Baker, who both did not compete during the indoor season. Both have prior national championship pedigree in their respective events.

Same goes for Malone's Hannah Thompson, who is using her final year of outdoor eligibility and is one of the conference's best distance performers.

While Hillsdale (women) and Findlay (men) captured the team titles during the indoor championship meet at Cedarville, the outdoor titles will be just as competitive in the team scoring.

Tiffin was the most recent men's and women's outdoor team champion back in 2019.
