COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio Valley was crowned Great Midwest Men’s Soccer Champions on Sunday afternoon after defeating Tiffin 2-0 in the championship match.
The No. 1 seeded Fighting Scots capped off a perfect season with a tournament championship, the program’s first since 2017. They defeated the Dragons who made back-to-back championship tournament runs in 2018 and 2019.
OVU defeated Walsh (1-0) in the quarterfinal round and Ohio Dominican (5-2) in the semifinals to reach the championship match. The road to the championship match for Tiffin consisted of beating Findlay in the quarterfinals (4-2) and Cedarville (3-2) in the semifinals.
The deciding goal of Sunday’s championship match came from Great Midwest Offensive Player of the Year, Juan Hoyos, in the first four minutes of play. The assist came from Luiz Neto. Tomas Muller added the finishing touches for the Fighting Scots with a goal in the 54th minute, unassisted.
Ohio Valley was able to earn a few more scoring opportunities as the Fighting Scots finished with 11 shots compared to Tiffin’s nine shots.
Santiago Rojas recorded the win in goal with five saves.
