ALLENDALE, Mich. – No. 4 seed Trevecca Nazarene, No. 5 Hillsdale and No. 6 Ohio Dominican, all earned national tournament wins in some form as the dust cleared from Wednesday at the Midwest Regional hosted by Grand Valley State.
The double-elimination bracket set up for either TNU or HC, both at-large selections, to advance in the winner’s portion.
Runs flew off the board early as Hillsdale scored in the top half of the first inning and TNU countered with a three spot in their first trip to the plate. Carly Sperlich and Brooke Eakes each had a double and two hits apiece in the heart of the Trojans lineup.
Raygn Hall, pitching for the first time since the conference championship title game vs. Ohio Dominican, limited the damage in a complete game effort with two runs scattered on nine hits while recording a pair of strikeouts.
The Trojans will face top seed and region host Grand Valley State on Thursday at 11 a.m. ET.
The Chargers bounced back in a hurry and showed their resiliency in an elimination game against No. 3 seed Northwood, a future Great Midwest Athletic Conference member institution.
First team all-conference outfielder Natalie Stepanenko dealt the big blow with a two-run double in the second inning. The loss officially eliminated the Timberwolves from postseason contention and Hillsdale awaits the loser of TNU/GVSU and ODU/UIndy on Friday at 1:30 p.m. ET.
RHP Dana Weidinger tamed a dangerous Northwood offense with seven strikeouts over the full seven innings. She gave up just one run on seven hits while walking three for her 21st win of the spring.
Conference tournament champion Ohio Dominican received more postseason production from RHP Sydney Long and timely hitting with a pair of runs manufactured in the fifth inning.
Erika Case hit a solo shot and Raemon Meents added an extra-base hit of her own with an RBI double to account for the Panthers’ scoring. Long did the rest while allowing just two hits and recording four strikeouts vs. Northwood in the opening-round upset.
ODU will face No. 2 seed UIndy tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. ET.
