Men's Soccer Championship - Semifinal Recap

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio Valley and Tiffin advance out of the semifinal round of the Great Midwest Men’s Soccer Tournament held on Friday afternoon at Ohio Dominican.

The semifinal matches were originally scheduled for Thursday afternoon, but were pushed to Friday due to inclement weather. The weather continued to be a challenge as a 30-minute lightning delay occurred toward the end of Friday’s first match. 

The first match of the afternoon featured No. 1 Ohio Valley and No. 5 Ohio Dominican and the second match featured No. 2 Cedarville and No. 3 Tiffin. 

No. 1 Ohio Valley vs No. 5 Ohio Dominican 

Ohio Valley took an early first lead in the first period, scoring on the Fighting Scots first shot of the contest. Hugo Becerra broke away from the pack to make the score 1-0, assisted by Benjamin Grelet-Cons. 

Ohio Dominican then scored two consecutive goals to take the lead going into halftime. The first Panther goal came from River Allbaugh, assisted by Griffin Cook and the second goal came off a penalty kick by Nuno Lopez.

In the second period, the Fighting Scots once again scored early with a goal by Juan Hoyos, assisted by Luiz Neto in the 51st minute of play to tie the match at 2-2. In the 65th minute of play, Neto added a goal of his own to take back the lead, 3-2. 

An Ohio Dominican red card resulted in a penalty kick goal by Christian Gutierrez in the 79th minute to extend the Ohio Valley lead. Neto put the finishing touches on the match with another goal in the 82nd minute, assisted by Becerra. 

Santiago Rojas picked up the win in goal for OVU with 5 saves on 7 shots on goal.

No. 2 Cedarville vs No. 3 Tiffin

The Dragons scored the first goal of the match only six minutes into the contest, as Juan Rosique assisted Caleb Gibbons. In the 41st minute, Cedarville tied the match with a goal of their own by Mauricio Ochoa Vazquez, assisted by Victor Pomelli. 

The Yellow Jackets took the lead in the first minute of the second period on a goal by Andy Volk, assisted by Sammy Killimann.

Tiffin tied it back up at 2-2 with a goal from Pero Mikulic, assisted by Joel Daly. The game-winning goal came off a penalty kick by Juan Rosique to clinch the win for the Dragons. 

Declan Lehman recorded the win in goal with five saves on the day. 

The championship match will take place on Sunday at noon ET.
